Chicago at Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a wild shootout that defied pregame projections and featured nearly 90 combined points, the Chicago Bears outlasted the Cincinnati Bengals 47-42 on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.
The game, witnessed by a crowd of 66,264, was a dramatic departure from expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring 27-22 victory for Cincinnati, which entered as a 2.5-point favorite with a 76.7 percent probability to win according to the ELO system. The final total of 89 points easily surpassed the over/under line of 51.5.
The fireworks began instantly. On the opening kickoff, Cincinnati’s Charlie Jones fielded the ball at the 2-yard line and raced 98 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bengals a lead just 11 seconds into the contest.
Chicago responded with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a trick play. Wide receiver DJ Moore took a lateral and threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Caleb Williams, who had drifted into the end zone, to tie the game.
After a Bengals field goal made it 10-7, the Bears offense found its rhythm. Williams engineered another long drive in the second quarter, finishing it with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus. A late second-quarter field goal by Cairo Santos extended Chicago’s lead to 17-10.
Just before halftime, Cincinnati quarterback Joe Flacco connected with Tee Higgins on a 44-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 20, after the Bears had a potential answering field goal blocked as time expired.
Chicago seized control coming out of the locker room. Williams led two extended third-quarter touchdown drives, finding tight end Colston Loveland for a 5-yard score and watching running back Brittain Brown break free for a 22-yard rushing touchdown to build a 34-20 advantage.
The Bears extended their lead to 37-20 early in the fourth quarter on another Santos field goal.
Cincinnati, led by the veteran Flacco, mounted a furious comeback. Flacco, who finished with 470 yards passing and four touchdowns, engineered a late drive that ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Noah Fant, cutting the deficit to 37-35 after a successful two-point conversion.
The Bengals then recovered an onside kick, and Flacco needed just five plays to find Andrei Iosivas for a 9-yard touchdown, giving Cincinnati a stunning 42-37 lead with just 54 seconds remaining.
The drama, however, was not over. Williams, who threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 53 yards and catching a touchdown pass, had one final answer. He hit Loveland on a deep post for a 58-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Bears with a precarious 43-42 lead.
Needing only a field goal to win, Flacco and the Bengals took over with 17 seconds. On the second play of the drive, Flacco’s pass over the middle was intercepted by Chicago cornerback Nahshon Wright, who returned it to the 26-yard line to seal the victory. As time expired, the Bears added a safety when Flacco was called for intentional grounding in his own end zone, accounting for the final 47-42 margin.
Williams’ versatile performance was the catalyst for Chicago, with Loveland being his primary target, hauling in six passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. For Cincinnati, Flacco spread the ball effectively, with Higgins catching seven passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns and Ja’Marr Chase adding six receptions for 111 yards.
With the win, the Bears improved to 5-3 on the season, while the Bengals fell to 3-6. Chicago hosts the New York Giants next Sunday, while Cincinnati travels to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 16.
