Bears Outlast Bengals in High-Scoring Shootout

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a wild shootout that defied pregame projections and featured nearly 90 combined points, the Chicago Bears outlasted the Cincinnati Bengals 47-42 in a National Football League game Sunday at Paycor Stadium.

The contest, witnessed by 66,264 fans, was a dramatic departure from expectations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring affair with Cincinnati winning 27-22, and its ELO system gave the Bengals a 76.7 percent probability to win. The Bengals had been installed as 2.5-point favorites, but the teams obliterated the over/under line of 51.5 with a total of 89 points.

The game began with an immediate shock as Cincinnati’s Charlie Jones returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, giving the home team a 7-0 lead just 11 seconds into the contest.

Chicago responded with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes. The drive was capped by a trick play, with receiver D.J. Moore throwing a 2-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Caleb Williams, who had lined up as an eligible receiver, to tie the score.

After a Bengals field goal, the Bears took their first lead early in the second quarter when Williams connected with Olamide Zaccheaus on a 15-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-10. Chicago extended its lead to 17-10 on a Cairo Santos field goal just before halftime, but Cincinnati struck back quickly. Joe Flacco found Tee Higgins for a 44-yard touchdown pass with 1:12 remaining in the half, narrowing the gap to 17-16 after a failed extra point. A blocked field goal by Cincinnati as the first half expired kept the score close.

The Bears opened the second half with another long scoring drive, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Williams to rookie tight end Colston Loveland. Cincinnati answered with a Flacco touchdown pass to Higgins, but Chicago running back Brittain Brown broke free for a 22-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter to push the Bears’ lead to 31-20.

A Santos field goal early in the fourth quarter extended Chicago’s advantage to 34-20. The game then turned into a frantic back-and-forth affair in the final minutes.

After a missed Bengals field goal, Chicago seemed to seal the victory when linebacker Tremaine Edmunds intercepted a Flacco pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. However, the play was reviewed and reversed, ruling Edmunds was down by contact at the Chicago 4-yard line.

Given new life, the Bengals capitalized. Flacco engineered a quick drive, finding Noah Fant for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Cincinnati successfully recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Flacco went right back to work, connecting with Andrei Iosivas on a 9-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 34 with 54 seconds remaining after the extra point.

The Bears, however, had one last dramatic response. Williams led a two-play, 58-yard drive in just 18 seconds, hitting Loveland for a 58-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 40-34.

Cincinnati’s final desperation drive ended when Nahshon Wright intercepted a Flacco pass in the final seconds to secure the wild victory for Chicago.

Statistically, the game was a showcase for the veteran and the young quarterback. Cincinnati’s Joe Flacco, from Audubon, New Jersey, put up prolific numbers in the losing effort, completing 31 of 47 passes for 470 yards and four touchdowns, though he was intercepted twice.

Chicago’s Caleb Williams, from Washington, D.C., was dynamic, completing 20 of 34 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 53 yards on five carries and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass, showcasing his multifaceted skills.

Key receiving performances included Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins, who had seven catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and Ja’Marr Chase, who added six receptions for 111 yards. For Chicago, tight end Colston Loveland was a standout with six receptions for 118 yards and two crucial touchdowns.

Defensively, the game was led by tacklers from Cincinnati, with safety Jordan Battle recording 12 tackles and linebacker Barrett Carter adding 10. For Chicago, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds had nine tackles and an interception.

With the win, the Bears improved their season record to 5-3 across all competitions. The Bengals fell to 3-6.

Chicago will host the New York Giants next Sunday. Cincinnati travels to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 16.
