Hawks Dominate Magic With Explosive Second Quarter in Road Victory
ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — The Atlanta Hawks unleashed a dominant second-quarter surge and never looked back, cruising to a 130-101 victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night at Kia Center.
A crowd of 17,324 watched the Hawks turn a tightly contested first quarter into a runaway by halftime, outscoring the Magic 47-26 in the period to seize full control. The offensive explosion was led by guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who poured in a game-high 32 points, continuing his recent run of stellar play.
The game was competitive early, with Orlando holding a narrow 28-25 lead after the opening quarter. The momentum shifted decisively in the second. Atlanta’s ball movement and shot-making overwhelmed the Magic defense. The Hawks opened the quarter on a 13-2 run, capped by a Nickeil Alexander-Walker 3-pointer, to take a 38-30 lead they would not relinquish. Atlanta shot a blistering percentage from the field in the period, with Alexander-Walker and forward Jalen Johnson orchestrating the offense. Johnson finished the night with a near triple-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.
Orlando, which entered the game fighting for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, struggled to find consistent offense outside of spurts from forward Jamal Cain, who came off the bench to score 17 points. The Magic’s primary scorers were largely contained; forward Paolo Banchero was held to 11 points and forward-center Wendell Carter Jr., a native of Atlanta, Georgia, added 14.
The Hawks’ lead ballooned to 29 points by the end of the third quarter, allowing both teams to empty their benches for the final period. The most significant moment of the second half occurred early in the fourth quarter when Orlando center Goga Bitadze was ejected after being assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 following a coach’s challenge and subsequent review by the officials.
Atlanta’s depth was on full display throughout the night. Guard Dyson Daniels recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while forward Onyeka Okongwu of Los Angeles, California, contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Reserve forward Jonathan Kuminga added 12 points for the Hawks.
For Orlando, guard Jalen Suggs distributed nine assists but managed only seven points on poor shooting. Forward Tristan da Silva provided a spark off the bench with nine points and six assists.
The victory improved Atlanta’s record to 44-33, solidifying its standing in the conference. Orlando fell to 40-36 with the loss, dropping a crucial game in the crowded race for postseason seeding.
The Hawks have now won four of their last five games, including a 124-112 victory over these same Magic in Atlanta on March 16. Orlando had entered the contest coming off a narrow home win over Phoenix but could not sustain that momentum against Atlanta’s offensive onslaught.
Atlanta shot a significantly higher percentage from the field and from 3-point range than Orlando, which also was outrebounded decisively. The Hawks’ 130-point output marked the seventh time this season they have scored at least 130 points.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Atlanta a 54% probability to win, and the Hawks covered the pregame spread as a 4-point favorite. The combined score of 231 points went under the posted over/under line of 233.
Atlanta will continue its road trip Friday against the Brooklyn Nets. Orlando begins a challenging three-game road swing Friday in Dallas against the Mavericks.
