Mariners Outlast Tigers in 15-Inning Playoff Marathon to Even Series
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Jorge Polanco’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 15th inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in a tense Game 5 of their playoff series Friday at T-Mobile Park. The win before a crowd of 47,025 evened the best-of-seven series at two games apiece.
The game was a pitchers’ duel for much of the night. Detroit’s Tarik Skubal struck out 13 over six dominant innings, allowing just one run. Seattle’s George Kirby was nearly as effective, yielding one run over five frames. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Kerry Carpenter, who went 4 for 5. Seattle tied it in the seventh and neither team scored again until Polanco’s game-winning hit. Luis Castillo earned the win in relief. The game lasted 4 hours, 58 minutes.
