Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners

SEATTLE (Interstat) — In a marathon American League Division Series Game 5 defined by dominant pitching and fleeting offensive opportunities, the Seattle Mariners outlasted the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in 15 innings Friday night at a sold-out T-Mobile Park to win the series three games to two.

A crowd of 47,025 watched for 4 hours and 58 minutes as the two teams battled through six scoreless extra innings before the Mariners finally broke through in the bottom of the 15th. J.P. Crawford led off with a single against reliever Tommy Kahnle, and Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch. After Cal Raleigh lined out, a throwing error by center fielder Parker Meadows allowed Crawford to advance to third. Following an intentional walk to Julio Rodríguez that loaded the bases, Jorge Polanco ended the epic contest by grounding a single to right field, scoring Crawford and sending the Mariners to the next round of the playoffs.

The game was a stark contrast to a pitcher’s duel that began the evening. Detroit’s Tarik Skubal was magnificent, striking out 13 over six innings of work. He allowed just two hits and one earned run, which came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Garver that scored Josh Naylor, who had doubled.

Seattle starter George Kirby was nearly as effective, holding the Tigers to one run on three hits while striking out six through five innings. The game’s momentum, however, appeared to swing decisively in Detroit’s favor in the top of the sixth. Javier Báez led off with a double, and Kerry Carpenter followed with a two-run homer to center field, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Carpenter was the offensive standout for Detroit, finishing the night 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk.

The Mariners clawed back to tie the game in the seventh. After a walk to Polanco and a single by Naylor, pinch-hitter Leo Rivas delivered a clutch single to left field, scoring Polanco to knot the game at 2-2.

From there, the bullpens took over, putting on a clinic of relief pitching. For Seattle, Eduard Bazardo, Matt Brash, Logan Gilbert and Luis Castillo combined for 8 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out nine. Castillo, who pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings, was credited with the win, improving his record to 12-8.

Detroit’s relievers were equally formidable. Will Vest struck out four over two perfect innings, Jack Flaherty tossed two scoreless frames, and Keider Montero worked two innings without allowing a hit. But Kahnle, the eighth Tigers pitcher, could not escape the 15th, taking the loss to fall to 1-6 on the season.

Both teams finished with eight hits, but Seattle capitalized on its final opportunity, ending Detroit’s season and advancing in the postseason. The Mariners improved to 93-74 overall, while the Tigers finished their year with a 91-79 record.
