Braves rally past Rockies on Harris homer in ninth
DENVER (Interstat) — Michael Harris II capped Atlanta’s comeback from a six-run deficit with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and the Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 8-6 on Friday night.
Mauricio Dubón had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple in a four-run eighth inning, and Matt Olson homered for Atlanta, which gave manager Walt Weiss a win in his return to Coors Field. Weiss went 283-365 in four seasons as Colorado’s manager before being replaced by Bud Black following a 75-87 record in 2016. He served as bench coach for Atlanta for eight seasons before taking over as manager when Brian Snitker stepped down at the end of 2025.
The Braves improved to 23-10, while the Rockies fell to 14-19.
Colorado jumped on Atlanta starter Grant Holmes in the first inning. Edouard Julien walked, Mickey Moniak singled and Hunter Goodman hit a ground-rule double that scored Julien. TJ Rumfield singled home Moniak, Tyler Freeman bunted for a single that plated Goodman, and Troy Johnston singled to load the bases. Willi Castro grounded to first, but Matt Olson’s throwing error allowed both Rumfield and Freeman to score, giving the Rockies a 5-0 lead.
Moniak added a solo homer in the second inning, his ninth of the season, extending Colorado’s lead to 6-0.
Atlanta began its comeback in the fourth. Olson led off with a solo homer to right, his 10th of the year, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The Braves chipped away again in the seventh. Austin Riley singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by center fielder Jake McCarthy. Mike Yastrzemski grounded out to move Riley to third, and Jonah Heim’s groundout to second scored Riley, making it 6-2.
Atlanta broke through in the eighth. Ronald Acuña Jr. walked, Drake Baldwin struck out, Ozzie Albies walked, and Olson walked to load the bases. Dubón then lined a triple to right-center field, clearing the bases and tying the game at 5-1 on the play. Austin Riley followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Dubón and giving Atlanta a 7-6 lead.
Harris, pinch-hitting in the ninth, provided insurance. Jonah Heim walked, and Harris drove the first pitch he saw over the right-field wall for a two-run homer, his seventh of the year, extending the lead to 8-6.
Colorado threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Brenton Doyle singled with one out, but Robert Suarez struck out Julien and got Moniak to ground out to end the game. Suarez earned his fourth save of the season.
Didier Fuentes pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win, his first decision of the year. Holmes worked five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. Anthony Molina contributed two hitless innings of relief.
Juan Mejia took the loss for Colorado, falling to 0-3. He allowed two runs on two hits in the ninth. Rockies starter Jose Quintana turned in a solid outing, going six innings and allowing five hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. He left with a 6-1 lead but did not factor in the decision.
For Atlanta, Dubón finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Olson went 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Riley had two hits. Harris was 1-for-1 with the homer and two RBIs. Acuña Jr. singled twice and walked twice.
For Colorado, Moniak went 2-for-5 with a homer and an RBI. Johnston had two hits. Goodman drove in a run with a double. The Rockies out-hit the Braves 8-6 through five innings but managed only one hit after the second inning.
The game lasted 2 hours, 44 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 23,548 at Coors Field.
Weiss, who managed the Rockies from 2013 to 2016, received a warm reception from the Denver crowd before the game. His club responded with a resilient performance, erasing a 6-0 deficit that matched the largest comeback of the season for Atlanta.
The Braves will continue their three-game series in Colorado on Saturday. Atlanta then travels to Seattle for a three-game set beginning Monday, while the Rockies return home to host the New York Mets on Monday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Atlanta Braves 8, Colorado Rockies 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Atlanta with a 69.20 percent probability to win.
