Rays Power Past White Sox Behind DeLuca’s 3-Run Blast

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Tampa Bay Rays extended their winning streak to five games with methodical power and a dominant start from Jesse Scholtens, cruising past the Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Scholtens (1-0) was the story for much of the evening, silencing the White Sox lineup over five masterful innings. The right-hander allowed just one hit — a two-out triple by Andrew Benintendi in the fifth — while walking two and striking out three. He faced minimal trouble, with the White Sox only once advancing a runner into scoring position against him.

The Rays’ offense provided more than enough support, building their lead incrementally before breaking the game open late. Junior Caminero ignited the scoring in the third inning, launching a solo home run, his third of the season, off White Sox starter Sean Burke (0-2) down the left-field line.

Tampa Bay added two more in the fifth. After Hunter Feduccia and Taylor Walls singled, a sacrifice bunt and a Caminero groundout brought in one run before Jonathan Aranda doubled to right to plate Walls, making it 3-0.

Jake Fraley led off the sixth with his first homer of the year, a solo shot to right field that chased Burke. The left-hander finished with four runs allowed on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The game was decisively put out of reach in the seventh. With two on and one out, Yandy Díaz drove an RBI double. Jonny DeLuca, pinch-hitting for Fraley, then delivered the crushing blow, hammering a three-run homer to left-center off reliever Tyler Gilbert to extend the lead to 8-0.

The most important sequence of the game was Scholtens’ shutdown performance paired with that four-run seventh inning. While the Rays led 4-0, the game was still within theoretical reach for the White Sox. Scholtens’ efficiency and control set the tone, and the Rays’ explosive seventh, capped by DeLuca’s pinch-hit blast, transformed a comfortable lead into an insurmountable one, allowing Tampa Bay to coast through the final innings.

The White Sox avoided a shutout with a three-run rally in the ninth against Rays reliever Mason Englert. Sam Antonacci and Tanner Murray walked, and Derek Hill followed with an RBI single. Reese McGuire then singled home another run. Luisangel Acuña grounded into a double play that allowed a third run to score, but it was far too little, too late.

Cole Sulser provided two scoreless innings of relief behind Scholtens, and Englert finished the game despite the ninth-inning trouble.

The Rays collected nine hits total, with Caminero, Fraley and DeLuca each homering. DeLuca’s three RBIs on his lone swing led the team. The White Sox managed seven hits, all singles except for Benintendi’s triple, with McGuire driving in their only RBI.

Tampa Bay improved to 10-7 with the victory, continuing their strong run after a series sweep of the New York Yankees over the weekend. Chicago fell to 6-12, having lost the first two games of this series.

The teams conclude their four-game series Thursday afternoon. The Rays will head to Pittsburgh for a weekend series, while the White Sox embark on a road trip to Oakland.
