Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres continue their early-season National League West series on Saturday at PETCO Park, with both teams looking to gain ground after splitting the first two contests.
The Padres (7-6) took a 7-3, 12-inning win on Thursday before the teams played to a scoreless tie in a shortened game Friday. Saturday’s forecast calls for cloudy skies and 67-degree temperatures for first pitch.
Colorado (6-7) will send right-hander Ryan Feltner (1-0) to the mound. He will be opposed by Padres right-hander Germán Márquez (1-1). Márquez, a former Rockies stalwart, will face his old club for the first time.
A player to watch for the Rockies is rookie pitcher Chase Dollander, who started Thursday’s loss. He allowed one earned run over 4 1/3 innings and has a 4.86 ERA in three starts this season. For San Diego, shortstop Xander Bogaerts is swinging a hot bat. He is 9 for 24 (.375) with two home runs and six RBIs over his last six games, including a 2-for-6, four-RBI performance in Thursday’s win.
Despite the Padres holding a slight edge in the standings and recent head-to-head play, statistical projections offer a mixed outlook. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a narrow 6-5 Rockies victory. However, the same outlet’s ELO rating system gives San Diego a 75.8% probability to win. The Padres are installed as a -1.5 run favorite, with an over/under of 8.5 total runs.
Following Saturday’s game, the series concludes Sunday before both clubs embark on road trips. The Rockies head to Houston for three games, while the Padres host Seattle for three. The division rivals will meet again for a three-game set in Colorado beginning April 21.
