Padres Rally Past Rockies for Fourth Straight Victory
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Ramón Laureano’s three-run homer capped a decisive fourth-inning rally and former Colorado starter Germán Márquez earned a victory in his first outing against his old team as the San Diego Padres stormed back to defeat the Colorado Rockies 9-5 on Saturday afternoon at PETCO Park.
A sellout crowd of 42,318 watched the Padres erase an early four-run deficit, fueled by the long ball and a patient offense, to secure their fourth consecutive victory. The win improved San Diego’s record to 9-6, while Colorado fell to 6-9.
The Rockies struck quickly against Márquez, who spent his first 10 major league seasons in Colorado before signing with the Padres as a free agent on Feb. 16. Edouard Julien led off the game with a single, and two batters later, Mickey Moniak launched a two-run homer to right field, staking Colorado to a 2-0 lead.
They doubled their advantage in the third. Julien led off the inning with a solo shot to left-center, his first of the year. Two outs later, Moniak struck again, crushing a solo homer to right-center for his second of the game and fifth of the season, making it 4-0.
The Padres, however, immediately answered in the bottom half against Rockies starter Ryan Feltner. Laureano worked a walk and Fernando Tatis Jr. singled. Jackson Merrill’s groundout brought home Laureano for San Diego’s first run. Manny Machado then followed by driving a two-run homer to left-center, his second of the year, slicing the Colorado lead to 4-3.
The momentum shifted permanently in the fourth. With one out, Miguel Andujar doubled and Freddy Fermin walked. After a strikeout, Laureano stepped in and delivered the game’s pivotal blow, launching a three-run shot to left-center to put the Padres ahead 6-4. The homer was Laureano’s third of the season and continued his strong series.
Márquez settled after the early trouble, retiring the side in order in the fourth and working around two walks in the fifth. He finished his day having allowed four runs on four hits over five innings, striking out five and walking two to earn the win, improving to 2-1.
The Padres broke the game open in the sixth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and wildness from the Colorado bullpen. Fermin reached on a fielding error by third baseman Kyle Karros. Walks to Jake Cronenworth and Laureano loaded the bases. Tatis then drew another walk, forcing in a run. Merrill followed with a two-run double that deflected off shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, clearing the bases and extending the San Diego lead to 9-4.
Colorado scratched out a final run in the eighth when Tovar doubled and scored on Moniak’s RBI single, his third hit of the day, to make it 9-5. The Rockies threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs against closer Jason Adam, but Ezequiel Tovar popped out to end the game, giving Adam his first save.
The most important sequence of the game was the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing by a run, the Padres mounted a two-out rally against Feltner. Andujar’s double and Fermin’s walk set the stage for Laureano, who turned on a pitch and sent it over the fence in left-center. The three-run blast not only erased Colorado’s early lead but gave San Diego a two-run advantage and definitive control of the game’s momentum, from which the Rockies never recovered.
Feltner took the loss for Colorado, falling to 1-1 after surrendarding six runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Beyond the homers, the Padres’ offense was bolstered by a disciplined approach, drawing eight walks. San Diego relievers Wandy Peralta, Ron Marinaccio and Adam combined for four innings of one-run ball to seal the victory.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at PETCO Park.
