Soroka’s 10-K Gem Powers Diamondbacks Past Tigers in Slugfest

PHOENIX (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks, fueled by a dominant start from Michael Soroka and a four-RBI day from Corbin Carroll, weathered a furious six-run rally by the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning to secure a 9-6 victory on Monday night at Chase Field.

A crowd of 48,350 watched the Diamondbacks snap a three-game losing streak to open the season, improving to 1-3. The Tigers, who had taken two of three in San Diego to start the year, fell to an even 2-2.

The most critical sequence of the game came not during Detroit’s explosive comeback, but immediately after it. After the Tigers sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the seventh, erasing an 8-0 deficit to pull within two runs, Arizona designated hitter Ildemaro Vargas led off the bottom of the frame. On a 1-1 pitch from Detroit reliever Brant Hurter, Vargas launched a solo home run to left-center field, restoring a three-run cushion and halting the Tigers’ momentum decisively. The insurance run proved vital as the Arizona bullpen shut the door.

Soroka, making his first start of 2026, was the story for the first half of the game. The right-hander overpowered Detroit’s lineup over five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out 10 and walking none. He set the tone early, striking out the side in the fifth to cap his outing and preserve what was then an 8-0 lead.

Arizona’s offense built that lead methodically against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who took the loss and is now 0-1. The Diamondbacks struck for two runs in the first inning on an RBI triple by Carroll and a force out from Gabriel Moreno. In the second, Carroll provided the early dagger, blasting a three-run homer to right-center off Verlander to extend the lead to 5-0.

They added three more in the fifth to chase Verlander. Alek Thomas delivered a two-run double, and after a bases-loaded walk to Jordan Lawlar, Ketel Marte drove in another run on a fielder’s choice that required a successful challenge to overturn the initial out call at second base.

Trailing 8-0, the Tigers’ offense, which had been stifled by Soroka and reliever Juan Morillo, erupted in the seventh against the Arizona bullpen. The inning featured six consecutive hits with two outs. Dillon Dingler started the scoring with an RBI double, Javier Báez followed with a run-scoring single, and Colt Keith cleared the bases with a two-run double. Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson added RBI singles to cap the outburst, making it 8-6.

Vargas’s answering homer in the bottom of the inning, however, stifled the comeback. Arizona’s relief corps, which had stumbled in the seventh, locked down from there. Kevin Ginkel, Taylor Clarke and Paul Sewald combined for three perfect innings to seal the win. Sewald worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season.

Keith led Detroit’s 10-hit attack, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Carroll’s 2-for-4, four-RBI performance paced Arizona’s 11 hits.

The game time was 3 hours, 7 minutes. The combined 15 runs fell under the pregame over/under line of 9, despite the late offensive surge.

The two teams continue their three-game series on Tuesday night at Chase Field. The Tigers will look to even the series before returning home to face St. Louis, while the Diamondbacks aim for a second straight win before hosting Atlanta later in the week.
