Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Jared Triolo and Joey Bart each collected four hits and a home run as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense erupted for 15 hits in an 11-0 rout of the Athletics on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park.

The Pirates scored in four of the first five innings to secure a series victory, taking two of three from the Athletics. A crowd of 16,107 watched the game, which lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes.

Pittsburgh set the tone early against Athletics starter Mitch Spence. In the first inning, Bryan Reynolds singled and Spencer Horwitz walked to set the table for Andrew McCutchen, who drove in Reynolds with a line-drive single. Nick Gonzales followed with an RBI double to left field, scoring Horwitz for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Pirates doubled their advantage in the second. After two quick outs, Nick Yorke reached on a fielder’s choice before Triolo connected on a two-run homer, his seventh of the season, off Spence to left-center field.

The offensive onslaught continued against the bullpen. Pittsburgh broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning. Oneil Cruz delivered a two-run single that also included a fielding error by right fielder Carlos Cortes, allowing Cruz to advance to second. Triolo then singled him home for his third RBI of the day, making it 7-0.

The fifth inning brought more power. After a walk to McCutchen and a ground-rule double by Jack Suwinski, Bart launched a three-run shot to left field off reliever Osvaldo Bido. It was Bart’s seventh homer of the year and pushed the Pittsburgh lead to 10-0.

The Pirates added a final run in the eighth when Jared Triolo doubled, advanced to third on a single by Alexander Canario, and scored on a Spencer Horwitz groundout.

While the Pirates’ bats dominated, their pitching staff combined for a five-hit shutout. Starter Mike Burrows set the tone with four scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out three. Carmen Mlodzinski followed with three hitless innings of relief to earn the win, improving to 5-8. Dauri Moreta and Yohan Ramírez each contributed a scoreless inning to seal the victory.

The Athletics, who managed eight hits but went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position, never seriously threatened. Spence took the loss, falling to 3-6 after surrendering four runs on six hits over two innings.

With the win, the Pirates improved to 67-89 on the season. The Athletics fell to 73-83.

Oakland returns home to begin a six-game homestand Tuesday against the Houston Astros. Pittsburgh opens a six-game road trip Tuesday in Cincinnati against the Reds.
