Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Jared Triolo and Joey Bart each collected four hits and a home run as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense erupted for 15 hits in an 11-0 rout of the Athletics on Sunday afternoon at PNC Park.

The Pirates scored in five different innings, including multiple runs in four of them, to secure the series victory after the teams split the first two games. A crowd of 16,107 watched the game, which lasted 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Pittsburgh set the tone early against Athletics starter Mitch Spence, who took the loss and fell to 3-6. In the first inning, Bryan Reynolds singled and Spencer Horwitz walked ahead of Andrew McCutchen, who drove in Reynolds with a line-drive single to right field. Nick Gonzales followed with an RBI double to left, scoring Horwitz for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Pirates doubled their advantage in the second. After two quick outs, Nick Yorke reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored when Triolo launched a two-run homer, his seventh of the season, to left-center field.

Pittsburgh broke the game open with a three-run fourth. Bart led off with a single and Yorke doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Oneil Cruz then singled to right field, driving in both runners. Cruz advanced to second on a fielding error by right fielder Carlos Cortes and subsequently scored on an RBI single from Triolo to make it 7-0.

The offensive barrage continued in the fifth against reliever Osvaldo Bido. McCutchen walked and Jack Suwinski hit a ground-rule double before Bart crushed a three-run homer to left field, his fourth of the year, extending the Pirates’ lead to 10-0.

Pittsburgh added a final run in the eighth on a strange play. With Jared Triolo on third base, Spencer Horwitz hit a ground ball to first baseman Brett Harris, who elected to get the out at first, allowing Triolo to cross the plate.

The story of the game was the complete dominance of the Pirates’ pitching staff, which used five pitchers to combine on the shutout. Starter Mike Burrows set the foundation with four scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out three. Carmen Mlodzinski, who earned the win to improve to 5-8, provided three strong innings of relief, yielding just two hits and striking out three. Dauri Moreta and Yohan Ramírez each contributed a perfect inning of relief to seal the win.

Oakland’s bats were held to eight hits but could never string them together, going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven men on base. Brent Rooker led the Athletics with two hits.

The loss drops to 73-83 on the season, while the Pirates improved to 67-89. The result was a stark contrast to pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 7-1 Athletics victory, and their ELO system gave a 50.1% probability to win. The Pirates easily covered the spread as 1.5-run underdogs, and the total score of 11 went over the closing over/under line of 8.5.

The Athletics travel home to open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. The Pirates head to Cincinnati to begin a three-game set with the Reds, also on Tuesday.
