Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Rookie Bubba Chandler and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Nick Yorke and Bryan Reynolds hit home runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Athletics on Saturday night at PNC Park.

Chandler was dominant over five innings, allowing only Jacob Wilson’s two-out double in the second inning while striking out six and walking none. The right-hander has surrendered just one run over 11 innings in his last two starts, a strong rebound after giving up nine runs in 2 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on Sept. 7.

Braxton Ashcraft followed Chandler with three perfect innings, matching the starter’s six strikeouts. Dennis Santana worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 14th save of the season and his first since Sept. 3.

The Pirates provided all the offense Chandler would need in the second inning when Yorke led off with his first home run of the season, a fly ball to left field. Reynolds added a solo shot, his 16th, to right-center field in the third inning.

Oakland’s Luis Morales was the hard-luck loser, pitching effectively over six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, striking out four. The Athletics’ bullpen, Tyler Ferguson and Brady Basso, each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

The Athletics’ offense was completely stifled, managing just one hit and never advancing a runner past second base. Brent Rooker struck out four times as batters combined for 14 strikeouts.

The game was played in a brisk 1 hour, 52 minutes in front of a crowd of 18,209.

With the win, the Pirates improved to 66-89. The Athletics fell to 73-82. The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.

Chandler earned the win to improve to 3-1. Morales took the loss, falling to 4-2.
