Oakland Athletics at Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Rookie right-hander Bubba Chandler and two relievers combined on a dominant one-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Athletics on Saturday night at PNC Park.
Chandler (3-1) was masterful over five innings, allowing just one hit—a two-out double to Jacob Wilson in the second inning—while striking out six and walking none. The 23-year-old has surrendered only one run over his last 11 innings, a stark turnaround from a Sept. 7 start against Milwaukee where he was tagged for nine runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Pirates’ bullpen was flawless behind him. Braxton Ashcraft followed with three perfect innings, striking out six of the nine batters he faced. Dennis Santana needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in order in the ninth, securing his 14th save of the season and first since Sept. 3.
All the offense Pittsburgh would need came from two solo home runs. Nick Yorke broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning, launching his first homer of the season to left field. An inning later, Bryan Reynolds provided an insurance run with his 16th home run, a shot to right-center field.
The Pirates managed five hits off Athletics starter Luis Morales but made them count. Morales (4-2) took the hard-luck loss, pitching six solid innings and allowing two runs on those five hits while walking two and striking out four.
Oakland’s offense was completely stifled. Beyond Wilson’s double, the Athletics sent just three batters over the minimum, with a hit-by-pitch of Brett Harris in the third inning representing their only other baserunner. The top of the order, featuring Lawrence Butler, Brent Rooker and Nick Kurtz, went a combined 0 for 12 with seven strikeouts.
The game was a crisp, pitcher-dominated affair that concluded in a swift 1 hour, 52 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 18,209.
The result improved the Pirates’ record to 66-89, while the Athletics fell to 73-82. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
The outcome defied pregame projections from Interstat, which had simulated a 6-1 Athletics victory and gave a 51% probability to win. The combined two runs fell dramatically under the over/under line of 8.5, though Pittsburgh did cover as a +1.5 underdog.
