Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Fernando Tatís Jr. homered for the third consecutive game, and the San Diego Padres hit three home runs in the first two innings to power past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Saturday night at PETCO Park.
The victory, San Diego’s sixth in its last seven games, solidified the Padres’ momentum heading into the postseason, though they learned hours before first pitch they had lost their chance at homefield advantage for the upcoming National League wild card series against the Chicago Cubs.
A crowd of 44,457 watched as the Padres wasted no time, jumping on Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez (9-9). Tatís led off the bottom of the first inning by launching his 25th home run of the season to left field. After a single by Luis Arraez, Xander Bogaerts connected for a two-run homer, his 11th, to give San Diego a 3-0 lead.
The Padres extended their lead in the second inning. After a double by Ryan O’Hearn, catcher Elías Díaz lined a two-run homer to left-center field, his ninth of the year, making it 5-0.
That was more than enough support for a parade of San Diego pitchers. Yuki Matsui (3-1) was credited with the win, allowing one run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings of relief. The Padres’ bullpen was dominant, with Michael King, Jeremiah Estrada, Mason Miller and Robert Suarez combining for 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters.
Rodriguez took the loss for Arizona, surrendering all five runs on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out six but was undone by the three early home runs.
Arizona’s lone run came in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Geraldo Perdomo, his 20th of the season. The Diamondbacks managed just five hits total and finished the game 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven men on base. Their best chance came in the third inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Alek Thomas grounded out to end the threat.
With the win, the Padres improved to 89-73. The Diamondbacks fell to 80-81, ensuring they will finish the season with a losing record. The two teams conclude their regular seasons on Sunday.
