Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres, clinging to postseason hopes, host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday at PETCO Park in the second game of their final series of the regular season.

The Padres (87-72) enter the weekend series seven games behind in the NL Wild Card race with only three games remaining, making a playoff berth a mathematical long shot. The Diamondbacks (80-79), last year’s NL champions, were officially eliminated from contention earlier this week.

Saturday’s pitching matchup features left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (9-8, 4.13 ERA) for Arizona against San Diego right-hander Michael King (5-3, 3.28 ERA).

The series opened with a pitchers’ duel Friday night, a stark contrast to many of the teams’ high-scoring meetings this season. The Padres hold a 7-5 edge in the season series, which has seen dramatic swings. San Diego won three straight in early August, including a 10-5 rout, while Arizona took three of four in early July.

Arizona looks to rebound after being shut out 8-0 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, a game where relievers Taylor Rashi and Austin Pope provided scoreless relief. The Padres also seek to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, despite a strong 5-inning, 8-strikeout performance from starter Dylan Cease.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be an offensive affair, with a predicted final score of San Diego 7, Arizona 6.
