Padres power past Diamondbacks to close regular season

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Fernando Tatís Jr. homered in his third consecutive game, Xander Bogaerts and Elías Díaz added two-run homers, and the San Diego Padres rolled toward the postseason with a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night at a sold-out PETCO Park.

Several hours before the first pitch, the Padres lost their chance for homefield advantage in next week’s NL wild card series against the Cubs when Chicago beat St. Louis for its 91st win. The Padres still won for the sixth time in seven games, building momentum as they head into their second straight postseason appearance.

The victory improved San Diego’s record to 89-73, while the loss ensured a losing season for Arizona, which fell to 80-81.

A crowd of 44,457 watched the Padres seize control early, ambushing Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez in the first two innings. Tatís Jr. set the tone immediately in the bottom of the first, launching a solo home run to left field, his 25th of the season. After a single by Luis Arraez, Bogaerts followed with a two-run shot to left, his 11th, to give San Diego a 3-0 lead.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second inning. After Ryan O’Hearn led off with a double, Díaz extended the Padres’ advantage, connecting on a two-run homer to left-center field, his ninth of the year, making the score 5-0.

Rodriguez, the losing pitcher, settled in after the rough start but could not overcome the early deficit. He finished with a line of six innings pitched, allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out six. He fell to 9-9 on the season.

The Diamondbacks’ offense was held in check for most of the night, managing just five hits against a parade of San Diego pitchers. Their lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Geraldo Perdomo hit a solo home run, his 20th, off Padres reliever Yuki Matsui.

Matsui, who earned the win to improve to 3-1, worked 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Michael King, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout.

The San Diego bullpen was dominant following Matsui’s departure. Michael King provided 2 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out three. Jeremiah Estrada struck out the side in a perfect seventh inning. Mason Miller matched that feat in the eighth, also striking out all three batters he faced. Robert Suarez then closed out the game in the ninth, retiring the side in order with one strikeout.

Arizona’s best scoring chance outside of the Perdomo homer came in the third inning. After loading the bases with two outs on a single and two walks, Alek Thomas grounded out to second base to end the threat. The Diamondbacks would not seriously challenge again.

The game was played in a brisk 2 hours, 25 minutes. Arizona pitchers combined for 17 strikes, 46 balls and 17 balls in play, while San Diego’s staff tallied 10 strikes, 40 balls and 10 balls in play.

The two teams conclude their regular seasons, and this three-game series, on Sunday afternoon at PETCO Park. The Padres will then turn their attention to the Chicago Cubs and the National League wild card series, while the Diamondbacks will head into the offseason after finishing with a losing record.
