Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Giancarlo Stanton delivered a decisive three-run double in the fifth inning, and the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 5-3 victory Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
The win, before a crowd of 38,545, kept the Yankees tied with the Toronto Blue Jays atop the American League East with three games remaining in the regular season. Both teams hold a 91-68 record, the best in the AL, ensuring home-field advantage for the Wild Card Series should they not win the division.
Carlos Rodón earned the win, improving to 18-9 after pitching six innings. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out five. The Yankees’ bullpen sealed the victory, with David Bednar recording a perfect ninth inning for his 26th save.
Chicago took an early lead with small ball in the second inning. Miguel Vargas singled, Kyle Teel was hit by a pitch, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Michael A. Taylor. Corey Julks then brought Vargas home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The White Sox extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Taylor launched a two-run home run to right-center field, scoring Vargas who had walked.
The Yankees’ offense, quiet for much of the early game, erupted in the fifth against White Sox starter Davis Martin and reliever Tyler Gilbert. Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger hit back-to-back singles, and Ben Rice walked to load the bases. Stanton then cleared them, grounding a double down the left-field line to put New York ahead 4-3.
New York added an insurance run in the seventh when Austin Wells doubled off the center-field wall, scoring pinch-runner Jasson Domínguez.
Tyler Gilbert took the loss for Chicago, falling to 4-2 after allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief. The White Sox, who managed only five hits, fell to 58-101 on the season.
The Yankees have won five consecutive games and eight of their last nine. The game time was 2 hours, 47 minutes.
Chicago travels to Washington for a three-game series to conclude its season, while New York hosts the Baltimore Orioles for three games in a final push for the division title.
