Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Tommy Edman’s line-drive single in the top of the 11th inning scored Freddie Freeman and proved to be the decisive run as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in a tense, extra-inning affair Wednesday night at Chase Field.
The win improved the Dodgers to 89-69, while the Diamondbacks fell to 80-78 in a game that took three hours and 22 minutes to complete in front of a crowd of 43,417.
The game was a pitcher’s duel for seven innings before erupting into a late-inning nail-biter. Dodgers starter Blake Snell delivered a strong performance, allowing just one run on five hits over six innings of work, striking out five. His counterpart, Arizona’s Ryne Nelson, was equally effective, surrendering three runs on seven hits while fanning nine Dodgers batters across six innings.
Los Angeles struck first in the opening frame. Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a triple to right field and scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts. Arizona answered in the bottom of the first when Ketel Marte doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Moreno, making it 1-1.
The Dodgers reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning. After a strikeout, Tommy Edman singled to center field. Andy Pages then followed by launching a two-run home run to left-center field, his 26th of the season, to give Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage.
That score held until the eighth inning, when both offenses came alive. The Dodgers added what seemed like a crucial insurance run in the top of the inning. Betts singled and later scored on a double by Teoscar Hernández, who advanced to third on a fielding error by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The cushion was short-lived. The Diamondbacks mounted a fierce rally in the bottom of the eighth against the Dodgers’ bullpen. Marte singled and Perdomo walked, setting the stage for Corbin Carroll, who doubled to right field to score Marte. Moreno then singled to score Perdomo, and Adrian Del Castillo lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Carroll, completing the three-run inning and tying the game 4-4.
Both teams threatened in the 10th inning but failed to score. The Dodgers put runners on the corners, but a challenge upheld a play at the plate where Hyeseong Kim was thrown out by Carroll from right field. Arizona then loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame via a sacrifice bunt and two intentional walks, but Jack Dreyer induced an infield fly and a flyout to escape the jam.
In the 11th, Freeman, who began the inning as the automatic runner on second base, advanced to third on a sharp flyout by Hernández. Edman then delivered his clutch single to center field, scoring Freeman for the go-ahead run.
Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen recorded the final out of the 10th inning to earn the win, improving to 2-7. Justin Wrobleski pitched a perfect bottom of the 11th, striking out two, to secure his second save of the season. Arizona’s Brandyn Garcia took the loss, falling to 0-2 after allowing the unearned run in the 11th.
The victory gave the Dodgers a measure of revenge after a 5-4 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The two teams conclude their four-game series on Thursday. The Dodgers will then travel to Seattle for a weekend series, while the Diamondbacks head to San Diego. The combined nine runs went under the pregame over/under line of 8.5, defying the Interstat game simulator’s projection of an Arizona 7-6 victory.
