Dodgers Outlast Diamondbacks in 11 Innings to Even Series
PHOENIX (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth contest that required extra innings to decide, the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Chase Field, snapping a two-game skid and avoiding a series sweep.
A crowd of 43,417 watched as the Dodgers, who had lost the series opener in heartbreaking fashion a night prior, squandered a three-run lead in the eighth inning before finally pushing across the decisive run in the 11th.
The game began as a pitcher’s duel between two starters who delivered quality outings. The Dodgers struck first in the opening frame against Arizona right-hander Ryne Nelson. Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a sharp triple to right field and scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts. The Diamondbacks answered in the bottom half against Dodgers lefty Blake Snell. Ketel Marte doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Moreno, knotting the game at 1-1.
Snell and Nelson then settled in, trading zeros until the fourth inning. With one out, Dodgers center fielder Tommy Edman singled. Andy Pages then broke the tie, launching a two-run home run, his 26th of the season, to left-center field to give Los Angeles a 3-1 advantage.
Snell was masterful over six innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five. Nelson was equally effective, also going six innings and surrendering three runs on seven hits, but he racked up nine strikeouts.
The 3-1 score held into the eighth inning, where both offenses finally broke through against the bullpens. The Dodgers added what seemed to be a crucial insurance run in the top of the inning. Betts singled, and after two outs were recorded, Teoscar Hernández drove him in with a double to center field. Hernández advanced to third on a fielding error by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, but the Dodgers could not bring him home.
That missed opportunity loomed large as the Diamondbacks mounted a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the eighth. After a lineout, Marte singled and Perdomo walked. Corbin Carroll then sliced the deficit to one run with an RBI double, scoring Marte. Moreno followed with an RBI single to plate Perdomo, making it 4-3. Adrian Del Castillo then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Carroll to knot the contest at 4-4. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases again but could not take the lead.
Both teams threatened in the extra innings but were stifled by clutch pitching. In the top of the 10th, the Dodgers had a runner thrown out at the plate on a strong relay from Carroll to catcher James McCann, a call that was upheld after a Dodgers challenge. In the bottom of the inning, Arizona loaded the bases with one out after an intentional walk and a bunt, but Dodgers reliever Jack Dreyer induced an infield fly and a flyout to escape the jam unscathed.
The Dodgers finally broke through in the 11th against Arizona reliever Brandyn Garcia. Freddie Freeman, who began the inning as the automatic runner on second base, advanced to third on a deep flyout by Hernández. Edman then delivered the go-ahead run with a sharp single to center field, scoring Freeman for a 5-4 lead.
Dodgers closer Justin Wrobleski entered for the bottom of the 11th and was dominant, striking out two batters, including Alek Thomas on a foul tip to end the game and strand the potential tying run at third base.
Blake Treinen earned the win for the Dodgers, recording one out in the 10th inning to improve to 2-7. Garcia took the loss for Arizona, falling to 0-2. Wrobleski’s perfect inning secured his second save of the season.
With the victory, the Dodgers improved to 89-69 on the season, while the Diamondbacks fell to 80-78. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had simulated an Arizona 7-6 victory and gave the Dodgers a 53.6% probability to win. The combined nine runs went under the betting over/under line of 8.5.
The two teams conclude their four-game series and their regular-season rivalry on Thursday at Chase Field. The Dodgers will then travel to Seattle for a three-game weekend set, while the Diamondbacks head to San Diego for a three-game series against the Padres.
