Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Aaron Judge tied the major league record by reaching 50 home runs for the fourth time, hitting a pair of longballs as the New York Yankees regained a share of the AL East lead for the first time since July with an 8-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Max Fried won his sixth straight start and became the major leagues’ first 19-game winner. New York has won seven of eight, moving a season-high 22 games over .500 and getting to 90 wins for the seventh time in the last eight full seasons.

The Yankees, who had not held a share of the division lead since before play on July 3, are tied with Toronto atop the division with four games left. The Blue Jays, who have lost six of seven, hold the tiebreaker.

In front of 37,751 fans at Yankee Stadium, Judge’s milestone moment came in the second inning. After Anthony Volpe doubled and Trent Grisham walked, Judge launched a three-run homer off Chicago starter Jonathan Cannon, a towering fly ball to center field that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead and marked his 50th of the season. He joined Babe Ruth and Mike Trout as the only players to achieve the feat four times.

The White Sox had taken a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery hit back-to-back singles, and Vargas scored on Lenyn Sosa’s sacrifice fly to left field.

New York extended its lead in the third inning. Ben Rice tripled off the glove of center fielder Michael A. Taylor and scored on Paul Goldschmidt’s single. Goldschmidt then came home on a double by Jazz Chisholm Jr., making the score 5-1.

Fried (19-5) dominated from there, silencing the Chicago offense over seven strong innings. He allowed just four hits and one run while striking out seven. The left-hander faced minimal trouble after the second inning, efficiently working through the White Sox lineup.

The Yankees put the game out of reach in the eighth. After Ryan McMahon walked, Grisham connected for a two-run homer to center field. Judge followed by crushing his 51st home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center off reliever Cam Booser.

Cannon (4-10) took the loss for Chicago, lasting 4 1/3 innings and surrendering five runs on six hits. He struck out six but was undone by the two-run second and third innings. The White Sox bullpen combined for 3 2/3 innings of relief, with Tyler Alexander providing two scoreless frames.

The Yankees’ bullpen closed the door, as Paul Blackburn and Devin Williams each pitched a scoreless inning to seal the victory. New York outhit Chicago 10-5.

The loss dropped the White Sox to 58-100 on the season, while the Yankees improved to 90-68. The two teams conclude their four-game series on Thursday afternoon.

The game time was 2 hours, 38 minutes. The combined score of 9 fell under the pregame over/under line of 8.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Yankees 7, Chicago White Sox 2, and its ELO system gave the Yankees a 72.2 percent probability to win.
