Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a game defined by stellar starting pitching and late-inning drama, Spencer Horwitz delivered the decisive blow with an RBI double in the 11th inning, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park.
The win, played before a crowd of 30,725, gave the Pirates their second straight victory in the series and improved their record to 69-89. The Reds fell to 80-78 with the extra-inning loss, which lasted 3 hours, 33 minutes.
The contest was a classic pitcher’s duel for seven innings, featuring dominant performances from two of the game’s premier right-handers. Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes and Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene each tossed six innings and struck out seven batters.
Skenes was particularly sharp, allowing just four hits and no runs while effectively neutralizing the Reds’ lineup. Greene was nearly as good, surrendering two runs on five hits, with both runs driven in by Horwitz.
Pittsburgh broke through first in the fourth inning. Bryan Reynolds walked and scored when Horwitz laced a double down the right-field line. Horwitz was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, but the Pirates had a 1-0 lead.
Horwitz struck again in the sixth, following a Reynolds double with a single to left field to plate another run, pushing the advantage to 2-0.
The Pirates’ bullpen preserved the lead into the late innings, but Cincinnati mounted a comeback against reliever Dennis Santana. Noelvi Marte ignited the rally in the eighth with a spectacular inside-the-park home run, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the ninth, Tyler Stephenson brought the home crowd to its feet, launching a solo home run to left-center field to tie the game 2-2 and force extra innings.
Pittsburgh reclaimed the lead in the top of the 10th. With the automatic runner on second, Jack Suwinski hit a ground-rule double to center field, scoring Nick Yorke to make it 3-2. The Reds, however, answered immediately in the bottom half. With a runner on third, Gavin Lux lifted a sacrifice fly to center, allowing TJ Friedl to score and knot the game once again at 3-3.
The Pirates’ resilience showed in the 11th. With Reynolds as the automatic runner, Horwitz came through for a third time, drilling his second double of the game to right field to score Reynolds with what proved to be the winning run.
Yohan Ramírez earned the win for Pittsburgh after recording four outs in scoreless relief, striking out two. Nick Martinez took the loss for Cincinnati, allowing the unearned run in the 11th.
The Reds threatened in the bottom of the 11th, loading the bases with two outs on a single and two walks. But Ramírez induced a ground ball from Noelvi Marte to third baseman Jared Triolo, who stepped on the bag for the forceout to end the game.
Stephenson had a standout night at the plate for the Reds, going 4 for 5 with a home run. Cincinnati outhit Pittsburgh 10-8, but stranded 11 baserunners.
The victory defied pregame projections from Interstat, which had given the Reds a 57.6% probability to win and projected a final score of 6-3.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Thursday.
