Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — A marquee pitching matchup between hard-throwing right-handers Paul Skenes and Hunter Greene is set for Wednesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds continue their three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

The contest pits two franchises heading in opposite directions in the final week of the season. The Reds (80-77) remain on the fringe of the playoff picture, while the Pirates (68-89) are playing out the string.

Skenes (10-10) will take the mound for Pittsburgh looking to finish his season at .500. He will be opposed by Cincinnati’s Greene (7-4), who has been effective in a season limited by injury.

The Reds took three of four from the Pirates in early August, but Pittsburgh evened the current series with a 4-2 victory on Tuesday. The teams have split the 10 games they have played against each other this season.

Cincinnati had won four straight before Tuesday’s loss, a surge that kept its slim postseason hopes alive. The Pirates, meanwhile, have struggled for consistency, going 4-6 in their last 10 games.

Despite Pittsburgh’s inferior record, betting markets have installed the Pirates as a slight favorite with a -1.5 run spread. The over/under is set at 7 runs. However, Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 victory for the Reds.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 78 degrees.

The series concludes Thursday before both teams hit the road for their final series of the season. Pittsburgh travels to Atlanta, while Cincinnati visits Milwaukee.
