Padres’ Early Onslaught, Vásquez’s Gem Sink Brewers

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres, riding a wave of momentum into the postseason, delivered a commanding statement Tuesday night, blanking the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers 7-0 at a charged PETCO Park.

In a game that served as a potential National League playoff preview, the Padres’ offense erupted early and their pitching was suffocating before a crowd of 44,089. Ryan O’Hearn’s first-inning grand slam set the tone, and right-hander Randy Vásquez dominated over seven brilliant innings to lead San Diego to its fourth consecutive victory.

The loss ensures the Brewers (95-63) will not reach 100 wins, halting their chance at consecutive 100-win seasons for the first time since a three-year run from 2012-14. Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the best record in the majors and home-field advantage throughout the postseason was trimmed to two over the Philadelphia Phillies.

San Diego (87-71), which clinched a postseason berth with an 11-inning thriller Monday night, continued its crisp play. The Padres have taken the first two games of this three-game set against the team they could face when the playoffs begin.

The outcome defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 7-6 Brewers victory, and its ELO system gave Milwaukee a 54.7 percent probability to win. The combined seven runs fell under the over/under line of 8.5.

Vásquez was the story on the mound, utterly stifling a Brewers lineup that managed just four hits all night. The right-hander improved to 6-7, allowing only one hit—a third-inning single to Christian Yelich—while walking none and striking out three over seven shutout frames. He retired the final 14 batters he faced, needing just 80 pitches to navigate his outing with surgical efficiency.

He was backed by a relentless offensive start. The Padres ambushed Milwaukee starter Bruce Zimmermann (0-1) from the outset. Luis Arraez led off the bottom of the first with a single, and after a Xander Bogaerts strikeout, Gavin Sheets walked and Ramón Laureano singled to load the bases. O’Hearn then stepped in and unloaded on a Zimmermann offering, launching a towering grand slam, his 17th home run of the year, into the right-field stands for a swift 4-0 lead.

The Padres were not done. In the second inning, Mason McCoy reached on a throwing error by Brewers second baseman Brice Turang. Arraez followed by drilling a two-run homer, his eighth of the season, to right field to extend the advantage to 6-0 and effectively put the game out of reach early.

Zimmermann settled in after the rocky start, ultimately working six innings and allowing seven hits and five earned runs, though only one run was earned after the first inning due to the error. He walked one and struck out one before giving way to the bullpen.

San Diego’s bullpen preserved the shutout. Yuki Matsui worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Wandy Peralta closed out the ninth, striking out two despite allowing a single to Sal Frelick.

The Padres added a final run in the eighth inning off Brewers reliever Tobias Myers, who had otherwise been effective over two innings. Jose Iglesias connected for a solo home run, his third of the year, to left-center field to cap the scoring at 7-0.

Offensively, O’Hearn led the way with his 2-for-4, four-RBI night. Arraez also had two hits, including his two-run homer, and a walk. Iglesias went 2-for-4 with the solo shot, contributing to an eight-hit attack for the Padres.

Milwaukee’s offense never threatened. Beyond Yelich’s single, they mustered only three other hits: a single by Blake Perkins and a single by Joey Ortiz in the eighth inning, and Frelick’s ninth-inning single. They advanced a runner to third base only once, failing to capitalize.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series, and their regular-season series, on Wednesday night at PETCO Park. The Brewers will look to regroup before heading home to face the Cincinnati Reds, while the Padres will aim for a series sweep before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks to finish the campaign.
