Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a stunning finish that defied the odds, the New York Yankees rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 3-2 victory from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees, who had been held in check for most of the game, won it in dramatic fashion against White Sox reliever Brandon Eisert. With one out and the bases loaded, Cody Bellinger worked a walk to force in the tying run. José Caballero then delivered the game-winning single, a fly ball to center field that scored Aaron Judge and sent the crowd of 38,318 into a frenzy.

The comeback victory improved the Yankees’ record to 89-68, while the White Sox, owners of the American League’s worst record, fell to 58-99. The final score of 5 combined runs fell well under the pregame over/under line of 9, contradicting a Interstat projection that had forecast a 7-2 Yankees win.

For eight innings, the story was dominant pitching and a single swing of the bat from Chicago’s Colson Montgomery. The game was a tight pitchers’ duel between Yankees starter Luis Gil and White Sox starter Shane Smith.

Smith was exceptional, striking out eight Yankees batters over five innings while allowing just one run on five hits. The only damage against him came in the second inning when Austin Wells laced an RBI double to score Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Gil was nearly as effective for New York, matching zeros with Smith until the sixth inning. With one out, Kyle Teel singled, bringing Montgomery to the plate. Montgomery connected on a Gil offering and launched a two-run home run, his 19th of the season, to right-center field, giving the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

The Chicago bullpen preserved the narrow margin through the seventh and eighth innings. Grant Taylor, Tyler Gilbert and Jordan Leasure combined for three scoreless frames, navigating around Yankees baserunners to maintain the lead.

Eisert took over for the ninth and immediately ran into trouble. Anthony Volpe and Wells led off with back-to-back singles, putting the tying and winning runs on base. Trent Grisham then grounded into what appeared to be a crucial double play, moving Volpe to third but clearing the bases with two outs.

With first base open, the White Sox opted to intentionally walk the dangerous Judge, bringing Bellinger to the plate. On a 3-2 count, Eisert unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Volpe to race home with the tying run. The next pitch was ball four to Bellinger, putting runners on first and second. Caballero, pinch-hitting, then ended the game with his single to center.

Luke Weaver earned the win for New York after recording the final out in the top of the ninth, improving his record to 4-4. Eisert took the loss, falling to 3-7.

The Yankees outhit the White Sox 11-7 but grounded into two double plays, which nearly cost them the game. The White Sox pitchers combined for 11 strikes, 39 balls and 11 balls in play, while the Yankees staff recorded 20 strikes, 53 balls and 20 balls in play. The game time was 2 hours, 50 minutes.

The loss extended a difficult stretch for the White Sox, who have lost seven of their last ten games. The Yankees, meanwhile, have won eight of their last ten as they push for a postseason berth. The two teams continue their three-game series Wednesday night in the Bronx.
