Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Michael Harris II launched two solo home runs, including the go-ahead shot in the seventh inning, to power the Atlanta Braves to their 10th consecutive victory, a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.
Despite owning the longest active winning streak in the majors, the Braves (75-83) had already been eliminated from playoff contention. Six of those 10 wins have come against the last-place Nationals, including a four-game sweep in Washington from Sept. 15-17.
The game was a tight pitchers’ duel for much of the night at Truist Park before a crowd of 37,322. Both teams finished with six hits, but Atlanta’s landed with more impact.
Harris broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, driving a fly ball to right-center field for his 18th home of the season. The Nationals had taken a 1-0 lead in the third when CJ Abrams singled to right field, scoring Nasim Nuñez.
Atlanta answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth as Ronald Acuña Jr. tied the game with his 20th homer, a blast to right-center. Harris then put the Braves ahead for good an inning later, crushing his second homer of the game, and 19th of the year, to straightaway center field.
Washington pulled within a run in the eighth on James Wood’s solo home run, his 28th, but could not complete the comeback. Raisel Iglesias pitched a scoreless ninth for his 28th save.
The victory went to Braves starter Hurston Waldrep (6-1), who delivered six strong innings. He allowed one run on five hits, walking four and striking out five. Joel Payamps contributed a scoreless seventh inning before Dylan Lee surrendered the homer to Wood in the eighth.
Brad Lord (5-9) took the loss for Washington despite a quality start. He pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four. Julian Fernández and Orlando Ribalta combined for 1 2/3 innings of relief, with Konnor Pilkington being charged with the decisive run after giving up Harris’s second homer.
The Nationals (64-94) saw a potential big inning fizzle in the third. After loading the bases with two outs, they managed only one run on back-to-back singles from Abrams and Daylen Lile before Luis García Jr. flew out to end the threat.
The game-time was a brisk 2 hours, 11 minutes. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday. Washington will then host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game set to end the season, while Atlanta will finish at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
