Braves Edge Nationals for 10th Straight Victory Behind Harris’ Two Homers

ATLANTA (Interstat) — Michael Harris II launched a pair of solo home runs, including the decisive blast in the seventh inning, to power the Atlanta Braves to their 10th consecutive victory, a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Truist Park.

Despite owning the longest active winning streak in the majors, the Braves (75-83) have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Six of those 10 wins have come against the last-place Nationals, including a four-game sweep in Washington from Sept. 15-17.

The game was a tightly contested pitchers’ duel for much of the evening. Washington’s Brad Lord matched Atlanta’s Hurston Waldrep for five innings before the Braves’ power finally broke through.

Washington struck first, pushing a run across in the third inning without the benefit of a hit until two were out. Walks to Brady House and Nasim Nuñez, sandwiched around a double play, set the table. James Wood then worked another walk to load the bases for CJ Abrams, who delivered a sharp ground ball single to right field to score Nuñez. Daylen Lile followed with another single to reload the bases, but Waldrep escaped further damage by getting Luis García Jr. to fly out to left field.

Lord cruised through the first four innings, allowing only a first-inning single to Jurickson Profar. The Braves finally broke through in the fifth when Harris II connected for his 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field that cut the Nationals’ lead to 2-1.

An inning later, Ronald Acuña Jr. tied the game with a mammoth blast of his own, his 20th, also to right-center field off Lord.

The deadlock was short-lived. Harris II stepped to the plate again in the bottom of the seventh against Washington reliever Konnor Pilkington and did even more damage, crushing a 3-2 pitch deep over the center field wall to put Atlanta ahead 3-2. It was his 19th homer of the year and his first multi-homer game of the season.

Washington answered immediately in the top of the eighth when Wood got a run back with a towering solo home run to right-center off Braves reliever Dylan Lee, his 28th of the year, making it a one-run game again.

But the Braves’ bullpen shut the door from there. Joel Payamps struck out two in a scoreless eighth, and Raisel Iglesias worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, to secure his 28th save of the season.

Waldrep (6-1) earned the victory, pitching six strong innings and allowing one run on five hits. He walked four and struck out five. Lord (5-9) was the hard-luck loser for Washington, delivering a quality start by going six innings and surrendering two runs on just four hits while striking out four.

The Nationals threatened in the ninth when pinch-hitter Josh Bell drew a two-out walk from Iglesias, but Robert Hassell III, pinch-hitting for Riley Adams, flied out to center field to end the game.

Both teams finished with six hits. The game was played in a brisk 2 hours and 11 minutes in front of a crowd of 37,322 at Truist Park.

The loss dropped the Nationals to 64-94 on the season. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had forecast a higher-scoring affair with Atlanta winning 7-4. The combined five total runs fell well under the over/under line of 9.
