Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Brooks Lee hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning and pinch-hitter Royce Lewis launched a three-run shot in the seventh, powering the Minnesota Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday afternoon at Target Field.

The win snapped Cleveland’s 10-game winning streak and prevented a four-game series sweep. The Guardians, who lost for only the fourth time in 20 games, missed a chance to pull even with Detroit in the AL Central after the Tigers also lost Sunday. Cleveland will host Detroit for a crucial three-game series beginning Tuesday.

Cleveland’s offense was quiet after a explosive start. Steven Kwan led off the game with a home run, his 11th of the season. Later in the first, Bo Naylor drove in George Valera with a sacrifice fly to give the Guardians an early 2-0 lead.

That was all the offense Cleveland would muster, managing just four hits total against five Minnesota pitchers. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson settled in after the rocky first, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts to keep his team within reach.

The Twins chipped away in the third inning when Kody Clemens singled home Byron Buxton, who had doubled, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The game turned in the sixth. With one out, Luke Keaschall hit a ground-rule double off Cleveland reliever Erik Sabrowski. After a groundout advanced Keaschall to third, Lee greeted new pitcher Matt Festa with a blast to right-center field for his 16th homer of the year, giving Minnesota its first lead of the series at 3-2.

Minnesota broke it open an inning later against Festa (5-4). Clemens reached on an infield single and Austin Martin followed with a single that included a throwing error by third baseman José Ramírez, putting runners on second and third. Lewis then pinch-hit and delivered the decisive blow, a three-run homer to left-center to make it 6-2.

The Twins’ bullpen was flawless, with Travis Adams, Cole Sands and Pierson Ohl combining for four perfect innings of relief to seal the victory. Kody Funderburk (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of work.

Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo was effective, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out five.

The game was played in 2 hours, 33 minutes before an announced crowd of 22,526.

Cleveland’s record falls to 84-72. Minnesota improves to 67-89. The Twins next travel to face the Texas Rangers for a three-game series starting Tuesday, while the Guardians return home to begin their pivotal set against the Tigers.
