Cleveland Guardians at Minnesota Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Brooks Lee hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning and pinch-hitter Royce Lewis launched a three-run shot in the seventh, powering the Minnesota Twins to a 6-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday afternoon at Target Field.

The win snapped Cleveland’s 10-game winning streak and prevented the Guardians from pulling even with the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central race. The Tigers also lost Sunday, 6-2 to the Atlanta Braves.

Cleveland, which lost for only the fourth time in 20 games, saw its record move to 84-72. Minnesota improved to 67-89.

The Guardians struck immediately against Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson. Steven Kwan led off the game with a solo home run to right field, his 11th of the season. After a walk to George Valera and a strikeout by José Ramírez, Kyle Manzardo singled to right, moving Valera to third. Bo Naylor then brought Valera home with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Cleveland an early 2-0 lead.

That was all the offense the Guardians would muster, however, as they were held to just four hits total. Woods Richardson settled in after the rocky first, pitching five complete innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo was effective in keeping the Twins’ bats quiet early. Minnesota got on the board in the third inning when Byron Buxton doubled and then scored on a line-drive single by Kody Clemens, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Cantillo worked into the fifth inning, leaving with one out after allowing a single to Brooks Lee and a ground ball single to Jhonny Pereda. Reliever Erik Sabrowski entered and navigated out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve the one-run lead, getting Austin Martin to pop out to first baseman Kyle Manzardo in foul territory.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the sixth. After Trevor Larnach struck out, Luke Keaschall hit a ground-rule double down the right-field line. A groundout by Edouard Julien moved Keaschall to third, bringing Lee to the plate. Lee greeted new Cleveland pitcher Matt Festa by launching his 16th home of the year to right-center field, giving Minnesota its first lead of the series at 3-2.

The Twins broke the game open an inning later against reliever Tim Herrin. With two outs, Kody Clemens reached on an infield single and Austin Martin followed with another single to third. A throwing error by Ramírez on Martin’s ball allowed Clemens to advance to third. Royce Lewis, pinch-hitting, then delivered the crushing blow, a three-run homer to left-center to extend the Minnesota lead to 6-2.

The Twins’ bullpen was flawless, combining for four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Travis Adams, Cole Sands, Pierson Ohl and Kody Funderburk shut down any chance of a Cleveland rally. Funderburk was credited with the win, his fourth against one loss. Festa took the loss for Cleveland, falling to 5-4 on the season.

The game was played in 2 hours, 33 minutes before an announced crowd of 22,526.

The Guardians now return home to Cleveland to open a critical three-game series against the division-leading Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The Twins head to Texas to begin a three-game set with the Rangers on Tuesday.
