Atlanta Braves at Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — Spencer Strider delivered five scoreless innings and Ha-Seong Kim provided an early spark with a solo home run as the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep of the reeling Detroit Tigers with a 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The Braves won their eighth consecutive game, capitalizing on timely hitting and a strong bullpen effort to hand the Tigers their sixth straight loss on their final homestand of the season. Despite both teams collecting 11 hits, Atlanta consistently converted opportunities while Detroit repeatedly squandered them, stranding 12 baserunners.
Strider, the winning pitcher, worked out of trouble on multiple occasions to earn the victory and improve to 7-13. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out six. The Tigers threatened in the third inning, loading the bases with one out, but Strider responded by striking out Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson to end the inning.
Atlanta built its lead methodically against Detroit starter Casey Mize, who fell to 14-6 with the loss. The Braves plated a single run in the third inning on an RBI single by Ronald Acuña Jr. that scored Vidal Bruján.
Kim extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the season, a line drive to left-center field. Atlanta added another run in the fifth when catcher Drake Baldwin lined an RBI triple to left field, scoring Matt Olson.
Mize was charged with three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out five.
The game remained 3-0 until the ninth inning, when the Braves broke it open against the Detroit bullpen. Ozzie Albies drove in a run with a double, Kim lifted a sacrifice fly, and Michael Harris II added an RBI double to push the Atlanta advantage to 6-0.
The Tigers avoided a shutout by scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth off Braves reliever Tyler Kinley. Gleyber Torres hit an RBI double, and Greene followed with a sacrifice fly. Raisel Iglesias entered and recorded the final out to seal the win for Atlanta.
A parade of six Braves relievers — Dylan Lee, José Suarez, Tyler Holton, Paul Sewald, Kinley, and Iglesias — combined to allow two runs over the final four innings to secure the victory.
The loss further tightened the American League Central race, as Detroit’s lead over the Cleveland Guardians was trimmed to just one game. The Tigers have now lost nine of their last 10 games. The Braves, despite the winning streak, are 73-83 overall, while the Tigers are 85-71.
Attendance was 34,042, and the game time was 3 hours, 17 minutes.
Atlanta returns home to begin a series against the Washington Nationals on Monday. The Tigers, concluding a disappointing 0-6 homestand, have an off-day before traveling to Cleveland for a critical three-game series against the Guardians starting Tuesday.
