Atlanta Braves at Detroit Tigers

DETROIT (Interstat) — Ha-Seong Kim homered and drove in two runs as the Atlanta Braves won their eighth straight game, completing a three-game sweep of the slumping Detroit Tigers with a 6-2 victory Sunday at Comerica Park.

Spencer Strider pitched five scoreless innings for the win, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out six. Six Atlanta relievers finished the game, holding off several Detroit threats before the Braves broke it open with a three-run ninth inning.

The Tigers, meanwhile, concluded a disastrous 0-6 homestand, their last of the regular season, and have lost nine of their last 10 games. The skid has seen their once-comfortable lead in the American League Central shrink to just one game over the Cleveland Guardians.

Despite both teams collecting 11 hits, the Braves were far more effective at driving runners home, going 4 for 12 with runners in scoring position while the Tigers went 2 for 13 and left 11 men on base.

The game was a tight, methodical affair for the first eight innings before Atlanta’s late surge. The Braves got on the board first in the third inning. Vidal Bruján singled, advanced to third on a Matt Olson single, and scored on a line-drive single to right field by Ronald Acuña Jr.

Kim extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning, launching a solo home run, his fifth of the season, on a line drive to left-center field off Tigers starter Casey Mize.

Atlanta added another run in the fifth. Olson walked, and with two outs, catcher Drake Baldwin lined an RBI triple into the left-field corner to make it 3-0.

That was enough for Strider (7-13), who worked out of trouble repeatedly. His biggest escape came in the bottom of the fifth. After two were out, Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene hit consecutive singles to put runners on the corners, but Strider struck out Spencer Torkelson swinging to end the threat and preserve the shutout.

The Tigers had their best chance to get back into the game in the eighth inning against Braves reliever Tyler Kinley. Dillon Dingler singled and Zach McKinstry doubled, putting runners on second and third with just one out. Kinley induced a popout from pinch-hitter Trey Sweeney to leave the runners stranded and maintain the three-run advantage.

The Braves then put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth against Detroit reliever Paul Sewald. Acuña and Baldwin drew walks, and Ozzie Albies drove them both in with a ground-ball double down the right-field line, scoring Acuña. Kim followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Baldwin to push the lead to 6-0. Michael Harris II capped the rally with an RBI double to center, scoring Albies.

Detroit avoided the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Atlanta’s José Suarez. Jahmai Jones walked and scored on a double by Gleyber Torres. Torres then scored on a sacrifice fly by Riley Greene.

Mize (14-6) took the loss for Detroit, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

The announced attendance was 34,042 for the afternoon contest, which took 3 hours and 17 minutes to complete.

The Braves (73-83) have been the hottest team in baseball over the last week and will look to continue their winning streak as they return home to face the Washington Nationals. The reeling Tigers (85-71), clinging to a narrowing division lead, must travel to Cleveland for a critical three-game series against the Guardians beginning Tuesday.
