Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The surging Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Sunday and moved into a tie with the New York Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League.
The Reds have won a season-high five straight games and six of seven. The Mets lost to the Nationals earlier in the day. Sunday’s game was delayed one hour and 11 minutes by rain.
Gavin Lux drove in the game’s only run with a two-out double in the third inning, scoring Matt McLain from second base. That was enough for a dominant Reds bullpen and a stingy start from Jameson Taillon, who took a hard-luck loss.
Taillon was the tough-luck loser, allowing one run on five hits over seven strong innings for the Cubs. He struck out four and walked none.
The Reds used a committee approach on the mound. Starter Andrew Abbott went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and no runs. Nick Martinez followed with 2 1/3 perfect innings of relief to earn the win, improving to 11-13. Graham Ashcraft handled the eighth and Tony Santillan struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
The Cubs threatened in the fourth, putting runners on second and third with one out after singles by Carlos Santana and Dansby Swanson. Justin Turner flew out to deep center, allowing Santana to tag and advance to third, but Michael Busch popped out to end the inning.
Their best chance came in the ninth against Santillan. Pinch-hitter Moisés Ballesteros walked and, after a flyout, Michael Busch walked to put the winning run on first. Santillan struck out Willi Castro and got Pete Crow-Armstrong looking to end the game.
The Cubs, who fell to 88-68, were swept in the four-game series and have lost four straight. The Reds improved to 80-76.
The game, played in the evening at Great American Ball Park following the rain delay, lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes. Attendance was 29,661.
The Cubs return home to face the New York Mets on Tuesday. The Reds will host the Pittsburgh Pirates, also on Tuesday.
