Laramie County vs Gillette

Preview: Laramie County at Gillette in Key Junior College Matchup

GILLETTE, Wyo. (Interstat) — A pivotal Region IX men’s junior college basketball matchup is set for Saturday when the Laramie County Golden Eagles visit the Gillette Pronghorns.

Both teams enter with nearly identical records, seeking momentum for the postseason push. Laramie County is 12-11 overall, while Gillette sits at 11-11.

The Golden Eagles won the first meeting this season decisively, 93-63 at home on Jan. 28. In that game, Laramie County’s TJ Coulter scored 34 points. Coulter has been on a remarkable scoring tear, averaging 34.3 points over his last four games. He is coming off a 44-point, 6-rebound performance in a 107-104 overtime loss at Eastern Wyoming on Feb. 11.

Gillette will counter with forward Rashad McCormick, who has been a consistent force. McCormick has averaged 26.2 points and 7.6 rebounds over his last five contests, including a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double in a loss at Northwest on Feb. 14. His production will be key as the Pronghorns look to avenge their 30-point loss from January.

Laramie County has shown a potent but inconsistent offense, scoring 99 or more points in three of its last five games but also suffering narrow losses to Casper and Eastern Wyoming in that span. Gillette has struggled recently, losing three of its last four, with all three defeats coming by 10 or fewer points.

The game features two of the region’s top individual talents in Coulter and McCormick, whose scoring duel could decide the outcome. For Gillette, containing Coulter is the obvious priority after his dominant showing in January. For Laramie County, building on its recent offensive surge while tightening its defense after the high-scoring Eastern Wyoming loss will be the focus.

Saturday’s result will impact seeding for the upcoming regional tournament, adding stakes to this regular-season finale between the evenly matched foes. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Pronghorn Center.
