Western Wyoming vs Gillette
GILLETTE, Wyo. (Interstat) — A Region IX men’s junior college basketball rematch is set for Saturday at Gillette College, where the host Pronghorns will seek to avenge a narrow January loss to the Western Wyoming Mustangs.
The Pronghorns (10-9 overall) enter with a slight edge in record and momentum, coming off a dramatic 74-73 double-overtime road win at Central Wyoming on Wednesday. Gillette’s success hinges heavily on guard Rashad McCormick, who delivered a heroic performance in that victory, logging 44 minutes and scoring 29 points with seven rebounds. McCormick has been a consistent offensive force, surpassing 20 points in three of his last five complete games.
Western Wyoming (6-10) looks to snap a two-game skid after falling 76-67 to Laramie County on Jan. 31. The Mustangs, however, won the season’s first meeting 91-88 at home on Jan. 14. A player to watch for the Mustangs is Yair Aburus, who was listed in the box score from the previous win over Gillette.
The Pronghorns’ recent results have been a rollercoaster, featuring both high-scoring wins and lopsided losses. Their defense will be tested against a Mustangs squad that has shown offensive capability, including in the first head-to-head matchup. Gillette’s supporting cast, including Jaden Smith who had 16 points and eight rebounds in the double-overtime win, will need to contribute consistently.
For Western Wyoming, finding scoring beyond its recent leading performers will be crucial to securing a season sweep. The Mustangs’ schedule does not ease after this contest, with a quick turnaround to host Central Wyoming on Feb. 11.
Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time at the Gillette College Pronghorn Center. The game is a key regional contest for both teams as they navigate the second half of the conference schedule.
