Indian River State vs Florida Southwestern State
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Southwestern State Buccaneers showcased their offensive firepower and capitalized on a dominant first half to defeat the Indian River State Pioneers 101-82 in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The Buccaneers, improving to 14-4, seized control early with a blistering offensive display, scoring 54 points in the opening quarter. They never relinquished the lead, entering halftime with a 101-54 advantage. The Pioneers, who fell to 6-10, matched Florida Southwestern State with 41 points in the second quarter but could not overcome the massive early deficit.
The most important part of the game was the opening quarter, where Florida Southwestern State established an insurmountable tempo and lead. The Buccaneers shot efficiently from the start, building a double-digit lead within the first five minutes and extending it beyond 20 points by the end of the period. This explosive start, fueled by transition opportunities and sharp three-point shooting, effectively decided the contest before the Pioneers could find their defensive footing.
Mason Blazer led the Buccaneers with 22 points, four assists and three rebounds, continuing his strong play this month. Kenyon Giles also scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, while Tyler Bey added 13 points and seven rebounds. Amont’e Allen-Johnson contributed 11 points and four assists.
For Indian River State, Isiah Cameron shouldered the offensive load with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds and four assists. Sharief Parks posted a near double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Statistically, the Buccaneers’ efficiency was the story. They shot 45.5% from the field and an impressive 51.9% from three-point range, making 14 of 27 attempts. They also converted 17 of 20 free throws. The Pioneers shot 44.4% overall and 40% from beyond the arc but attempted five fewer free throws and committed 15 turnovers, which Florida Southwestern State converted into 19 points.
The Buccaneers also won the rebounding battle 47-42, including 17 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. Their offensive rating of 128.7 on 78 possessions starkly outpaced the Pioneers’ 99.3 rating on 83 possessions, underlining the disparity in offensive execution.
Florida Southwestern State, which entered as a heavy favorite according to statistical projections, has now won three consecutive games. Indian River State has lost three of its last four.
The Buccaneers host Polk State next Saturday. Indian River State travels to face Miami Dade on Feb. 11. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Fort Pierce on March 2.
