McLennan vs Weatherford

WEATHERFORD, Texas (Interstat) — A surging McLennan team visits a struggling Weatherford squad in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Saturday at Coyote Gymnasium.

The McLennan Highlanders (5-1) enter on a three-game winning streak, including an 81-70 victory over Eastern Arizona on Monday. The Weatherford Coyotes (4-8) look to halt a two-game skid after falling 65-50 at Collin County on Wednesday.

McLennan’s early-season success has been fueled by efficient offense and balanced contributions. In the win over Eastern Arizona, Kenneth Morrast led the way with 21 points in 25 minutes, while Joseph Mayberry III added 14 points and Joe Burgess nearly posted a double-double with 7 points and 8 rebounds. The Highlanders’ only loss came by a single point, 79-78 at Paris on Nov. 20.

Weatherford seeks consistency after a season of dramatic swings. The Coyotes scored a 73-66 home win over Eastern Arizona on Jan. 2 but followed it with the low-output loss at Collin County. Guard Keith Gillespie was a bright spot in the win, scoring 14 points in just one minute of action, showcasing explosive potential.

Despite the disparity in records, Interstat’s game simulator projects a dead-even contest, forecasting a 100-100 final score. This suggests a potentially high-paced offensive battle.

The matchup pits McLennan’s momentum against Weatherford’s need for a turnaround as conference play deepens. The Highlanders will rely on Morrast’s scoring punch, while the Coyotes will look for Gillespie to provide a spark and for improved production after being held to 50 points midweek.

Saturday’s game is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They are scheduled to play again in Waco on Feb. 11.

Following this contest, Weatherford hosts Hill on Jan. 14. McLennan’s next game is at home against Ranger on Jan. 17.
