Cerro Coso vs Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a season-opening upset defying statistical projections, the Bakersfield College Renegades outlasted the Cerro Coso Coyotes 83-76 in a high-octane men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.

The Renegades, who were given only a 28.6 percent chance to win by Interstat’s ELO system, used a dominant rebounding performance and capitalized on Cerro Coso’s ball-handling miscues to secure the victory. Bakersfield improves to 1-0, while Cerro Coso begins its season 0-1.

The game was a tale of contrasting strengths. Cerro Coso’s offense was efficient, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range. However, the Coyotes were plagued by 20 turnovers and struggled at the free-throw line, converting only 56 percent of their attempts. Bakersfield, conversely, shot just 45 percent from the field but secured a commanding 38-29 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive boards that led to numerous second-chance opportunities.

The contest was tight throughout, featuring 10 lead changes and six ties. Cerro Coso’s Ade Daramola opened the scoring with a steal and an immediate three-pointer, setting the tone for a back-and-forth first half. The Coyotes took a narrow 32-31 lead into the break, but the Renegades surged in the second half behind a more balanced and relentless attack.

Bakersfield’s Zach Garnett recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, providing a crucial interior presence. Zykiar Henderson came off the bench to add 13 points, while Markell Brooks contributed 14 points and three steals. The Renegades’ ball pressure resulted in eight steals, directly leading to several fast-break scores.

For Cerro Coso, Ade Daramola led all scorers with 21 points, demonstrating sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Demarris Day added 20 points and five assists, and Issiakoi Aminou posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Despite the strong individual efforts, the team’s turnover count and Bakersfield’s 18-6 edge in offensive rebounds proved too much to overcome.

A key sequence late in the second quarter saw Bakersfield build its largest lead. After a Cerro Coso timeout, the Renegades forced consecutive turnovers, converting them into a dunk from Brooks and a three-pointer from Gustavo Chavez to extend their advantage and create a cushion they would not relinquish.

Cerro Coso will look to rebound in its next contest against Santiago Canyon College on Nov. 15. Bakersfield’s season continues on the road at Barstow College on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
