Western Nebraska vs Butler (Kan.)
EL DORADO, Kan. (Interstat) — The Butler (Kan.) Grizzly Bears unleashed a dominant offensive performance, outscoring the Western Nebraska Cougars 114-95 in a high-octane men’s junior college basketball game on Saturday.
The game, played at a frantic pace from the opening tip, saw the Grizzly Bears improve their season record to 3-1, while the Cougars remained winless at 0-4.
Butler’s victory was fueled by a balanced and efficient attack. Gora Niang came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, while Aiven Riley and Tim Walker II each added 15 points. The Grizzly Bears’ ball movement was exceptional, with Tristan Hankins dishing out a game-high six assists to go with his nine points. Devin Kerr controlled the glass, pulling down 12 rebounds to secure a double-double.
Western Nebraska, despite the lopsided final score, was led by a spectacular individual effort from Viktor Lukic-Gavric. The guard poured in a game-high 30 points, demonstrating a knack for drawing contact and converting at the free-throw line. Xavier Kirkpatrick provided a secondary scoring punch with 15 points for the Cougars, and Amare Jackson facilitated the offense with five assists.
The first quarter set the tone for a shootout, with both teams trading baskets in a frenetic opening period. Butler emerged with a 44-33 lead, establishing a cushion they would not relinquish. The Grizzly Bears continued their offensive onslaught in the second quarter, adding 70 points to put the game out of reach and cruise to the 19-point victory.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 100-100 tie. The same service’s ELO system, however, had given Butler a 74 percent probability of winning, a prediction the Grizzly Bears fulfilled with their potent scoring display.
The loss extends a difficult start to the season for Western Nebraska, which has now dropped consecutive games to Cowley and Dodge City prior to this contest. The Cougars will look for their first win on the road against Eastern Wyoming on Tuesday.
Butler, coming off a high-scoring win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, will aim to continue its winning ways on the road at Missouri State-West Plains on Monday.
