Blinn vs Western Texas
SNYDER, Texas (Interstat) — In a men’s junior college basketball game defined by wild momentum swings and relentless effort, the Blinn Buccaneers outlasted the Western Texas Westerners 92-89 in a double-overtime thriller on Thursday night.
The game was a tale of two halves, with a frantic, high-scoring opening act giving way to a grinding, defensive struggle that necessitated the extra periods. Blinn, playing its season opener, improved to 1-0, while Western Texas moved to 1-2.
Dashawn Ceaser was the undeniable star for the Buccaneers, pouring in a game-high 33 points to lead all scorers. His clutch 3-pointer at the end of the second overtime proved to be the final margin, capping a back-and-forth battle that saw neither team lead by more than a single possession in the extra sessions.
The first half was an offensive explosion, with both teams trading baskets at a blistering pace. Western Texas, fueled by a hot-shooting performance from beyond the arc, took a 69-62 lead into halftime. The Westerners connected on 13 3-pointers in the game, with Anesu Dehwe and Isak Homelius combining for six of them. Justin McCall also provided a significant first-half spark for the home team.
Blinn, however, was equally potent inside the arc in the opening periods. The Buccaneers scored 69 first-half points of their own, with Ceaser and Brandon Hatcher consistently finding seams in the Western Texas defense. The Buccaneers dominated the glass all night, finishing with a 47-38 rebounding advantage, which helped them weather Western Texas’s 3-point barrage.
The game transformed completely after halftime. Both defenses locked in, and scoring became a premium. The third and fourth quarters were a stark contrast to the first half, with Blinn managing just 23 points and Western Texas scoring only 20 over the same stretch. The Buccaneers’ ability to shut down the Westerners’ perimeter game was pivotal in their comeback.
Western Texas had a chance to win the game in regulation but could not convert on its final possession, sending the game into overtime tied at 89. The first overtime period was a defensive standoff, with both teams struggling to find any offensive rhythm, leading to a second overtime.
Beyond Ceaser’s heroics, Blinn received key contributions from Connor Sprattley with 11 points and Desmeon Jones with 10 points. Rollings Kamanda provided a strong interior presence off the bench, contributing eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Western Texas was led by a balanced attack. Justin McCall scored 19 points, while Isak Homelius filled the stat sheet with 17 points and five assists. Anesu Dehwe added 16 points, and Calven Charles recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks.
Statistically, the game was remarkably even. Both teams committed 14 turnovers and finished with nearly identical offensive ratings. The difference ultimately came down to Blinn’s superior shooting from the field, where they went 35 for 70 compared to Western Texas’s 29 for 66, and their ability to secure crucial rebounds in the extra periods.
The win gives Blinn momentum heading into a nearly two-week break before their next contest at New Mexico Military on Nov. 20. Western Texas will look to rebound quickly when they travel to face McLennan on Nov. 12.
