Harris-Stowe (MO) vs UHSP

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — In a high-octane NAIA men’s basketball game defined by offensive fireworks and a frantic final minute, Harris-Stowe edged UHSP 103-99 on Thursday night.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the closing seconds, a microcosm of the entire contest’s relentless pace. With UHSP clinging to a 99-98 lead after Bryant Odunayo’s layup with two seconds remaining, Harris-Stowe’s Nashawn Davis was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play. Davis calmly sank both free throws to put the Hornets ahead 100-99. UHSP’s Landon Engelage then fouled Davis again immediately, sending him back to the line with no time left. Davis hit the first free throw to extend the lead to two points and, after a UHSP timeout meant to ice him, swished the second to seal the four-point victory.

The final sequence capped a game where neither team led by more than eight points and the outcome remained in doubt until the final buzzer. The contest was an offensive showcase, with both teams eclipsing 110 in offensive rating. Harris-Stowe shot 55% from the field, offsetting UHSP’s advantage from beyond the arc, where they hit 13 three-pointers.

Umar Lawson led all scorers for Harris-Stowe, finishing with 33 points and nine assists. His backcourt mate, Nashawn Davis, added 30 points, with his clutch free throws providing the decisive margin. For UHSP, Jasmin Suvalija scored 31 points, fueled by seven three-pointers, while Brennen Walker posted a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds.

The game was a departure from recent trends for both struggling programs. Harris-Stowe, which entered the night with a 1-12 record, had lost three straight games by an average of just five points. UHSP, now 1-16, had been defeated by 33 points in its previous outing. The Hornets’ offensive output marked a season high and provided a rare bright spot in a difficult season.

Despite being out-rebounded 48-39 and committing 17 turnovers, Harris-Stowe’s efficient shooting and ability to draw fouls proved decisive. UHSP was whistled for 25 personal fouls, leading to 32 free throw attempts for the Hornets. Harris-Stowe also managed eight steals, converting UHSP’s 15 turnovers into key transition opportunities.

The win improves Harris-Stowe to 2-12 on the season, while UHSP falls to 1-16. Harris-Stowe travels to face Rust on Tuesday. UHSP continues its schedule at Columbia on Saturday.
