High Point vs. Wisconsin
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — A clash of contrasting resumes and styles will tip off Thursday when the seed High Point Panthers face the seed Wisconsin Badgers in a men’s NCAA Tournament first-round game at Moda Center.
High Point (30-4), champion of the Big South Conference, brings a nation-leading winning percentage and a 16-game win streak into its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016. The Panthers’ high-octane offense, averaging 84.2 points per game, will test a Wisconsin (24-10) squad built on the foundational Big Ten principles of defense and tempo control.
The Panthers are led by dynamic guard Rob Martin, who enters the tournament in strong form. Over his last seven games, Martin is averaging 16.9 points and 5.1 assists, including a 24-point, 7-assist performance in the Big South title game win over Winthrop on March 8. He is supported by Terry Anderson (18 points in the final) and Cam’Ron Fletcher (17 points).
Wisconsin, which fell to Michigan 68-65 in its regular-season finale, counters with its own versatile forward in Austin Rapp. Rapp posted 18 points and six rebounds in that loss and has been a consistent contributor, scoring in double figures in five of his last eight outings. The Badgers’ backcourt of Nick Boyd and John Blackwell, who combined for 27 points and nine assists against Michigan, provides balance.
The matchup presents a classic tournament question: can a dominant mid-major sustain its success against a power conference opponent battle-tested in a deep league? High Point’s record is glossy, but its schedule lacked the nightly rigor of the Big Ten, where Wisconsin secured road wins at Illinois and Purdue in March.
Wisconsin has been installed as a 10.5-point favorite by FanDuel Sportsbook, with the total points over/under set at 165. The Badgers will aim to grind the game to their preferred pace, while the Panthers will try to push the tempo and leverage their scoring depth. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. PDT tipoff on Thursday, March 19, with television coverage on TBS.
