High Point Edges Wisconsin in NCAA Tournament Thriller

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied both probability and point spreads, the High Point Panthers authored a March moment Thursday afternoon, edging the Wisconsin Badgers 83-82 in a heart-stopping NCAA Division I men’s basketball playoff game at Moda Center.

The Panthers, who entered as significant underdogs, secured the victory with a composed final possession after surviving a last-gasp attempt by Wisconsin’s Nick Boyd in the closing seconds. The win improved High Point’s remarkable season record to 31-4, while Wisconsin finished its campaign at 24-11.

The game’s decisive sequence unfolded over the final 55 seconds. With Wisconsin clinging to an 82-80 lead after Boyd’s driving layup, High Point called a timeout. Out of the break, Chase Johnston drilled a critical 3-pointer from the wing off an assist from Terry Anderson, giving the Panthers an 83-82 advantage with 54.6 seconds remaining.

Wisconsin had multiple chances to reclaim the lead. Boyd, who led all scorers with 27 points, drove hard on the ensuing possession but had his layup blocked by High Point’s Owen Aquino. The Panthers’ Cam’Ron Fletcher secured the defensive rebound and was fouled with 2.2 seconds left. Fletcher missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Badgers a final opportunity.

After a timeout, Wisconsin inbounded to Boyd again. The guard from Garnerville, New York, drove the length of the court and attempted another layup, but Aquino rose once more to get a piece of the shot. The ball caromed to Fletcher as time expired, triggering a celebration for the Panthers.

The game was a tense, back-and-forth affair throughout. Wisconsin held a narrow 41-39 lead at halftime, powered by the duo of Boyd and John Blackwell, who finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Badgers maintained a small advantage for much of the second half, but could never pull away due to High Point’s balanced attack and resilience.

High Point was led by its backcourt. Point guard Rob Martin of St. Louis orchestrated the offense with 23 points and 10 assists, while Terry Anderson, the team’s top star, posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Johnston provided a crucial scoring punch off the bench with 14 points, including the game’s biggest shot. Fletcher added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Aquino of Madrid, Spain, contributed 11 points, six rebounds and three critical blocks.

The Panthers compensated for being outscored 38-32 in the paint and 9-5 off turnovers by dominating in transition, outrunning the Badgers 16-5 in fastbreak points. Their ball movement, facilitated by Martin’s playmaking, consistently found open shooters and cutters against a stout Wisconsin defense.

For the Badgers, Boyd’s 27-point, six-assist effort was complemented by Blackwell’s double-double. Austin Rapp of Melbourne, Australia, added 12 points, but Wisconsin’s offense sputtered at key moments down the stretch, including two costly turnovers in the final minute.

The victory marks the continuation of a spectacular season for High Point, which has now won 10 of its last 11 games. The Panthers advance to face Hawaii on Saturday in Portland. The loss ends a season for Wisconsin that included several high-profile victories but concluded with a first-round postseason defeat few saw coming, as statistical models gave the Badgers an 85.7% chance to win pregame.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the final defensive stand. With the season hanging in the balance over the last 11 seconds, High Point, which had relied on its offense to take the lead, secured the win with defense. Aquino’s two key rejections on Boyd—first on a drive with 4.4 seconds left and then on the frantic final attempt—transformed from potential game-winning plays for Wisconsin into the defining, game-sealing moments for the Panthers. That sequence, protecting a one-point lead without the security of a clock runoff, encapsulated the toughness and timely execution required to pull off a monumental upset in March.
