Towson Holds Off Hampton Rally in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering first-half collapse and a furious, but ultimately futile, second-half rally, the Towson Tigers held off the Hampton Pirates 74-68 in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game Saturday at CareFirst Arena.

The contest pivoted on a disastrous opening period for Hampton. The Pirates managed only 17 points before halftime, shooting a frigid 6 of 32 from the floor and committing seven turnovers. Their offensive struggles were compounded by Towson’s efficient start, as the Tigers built a 30-17 lead by intermission behind 12 points from Dylan Williamson and 10 from Tyler Tejada.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably Hampton’s second-half surge, which transformed a potential blowout into a tense, possession-by-possession battle. The Pirates, who entered the game with a 13-18 record, emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, spearheaded by guard Michael Eley. The Fort Wayne, Indiana, native, who played just six minutes in the first half, exploded for 23 points after halftime, single-handedly igniting the Hampton offense.

Hampton’s 51-point second-half outburst was a stark contrast to the first. They attacked the rim, generated 17 offensive rebounds for the game, and slowly chipped away at the deficit. A driving layup by Eley with just over four minutes remaining capped a run that brought the Pirates within a single possession at 63-60, sending a jolt through the announced crowd of 1,770.

But each time Hampton threatened, Towson’s star forward Tyler Tejada had an answer. The 6-foot-8 junior from Teaneck, New Jersey, delivered a career-defining performance, scoring a game-high 35 points on 12-of-24 shooting. He added three assists, a block and a steal in 38 minutes, consistently hitting difficult shots to stem Hampton’s momentum. His driving layup with 2:10 left pushed Towson’s lead back to 63-60, and he was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:09 to seal the victory.

Williamson provided crucial support for Towson with 20 points, while Hampton’ Daniel Johnson of Chicago contributed 11 points and three blocks. Despite the loss, Hampton’s second-half fight was notable, improving their shooting to 19 of 35 after the break. However, their overall inefficiency—shooting just 37.3% for the game and 5 of 24 from three-point range—and a mere three team assists proved insurmountable.

Towson, which entered as a 6-point favorite according to sportsbooks, won despite being out-rebounded 45-33, thanks to superior shot-making. The Tigers shot 46.3% from the field and connected on 5 of 11 three-point attempts. Their ability to draw fouls and convert at the line was decisive; they made 19 of 25 free throws compared to Hampton’s 13 of 21.

The game’s total of 142 points surpassed the pregame over/under line of 131.5. With the win, Towson improved its season record to 18-14, while Hampton fell to 13-19. The Tigers avenged a 63-62 home loss to the Pirates on Dec. 31, though Hampton had suffered an 82-50 defeat in the most recent meeting between the teams on Jan. 31.

Hampton concludes its regular season Sunday against College of Charleston, also at CareFirst Arena in Washington.
