Saint Thomas (Minn.) Pulls Away From Omaha in Summit League Matchup

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive struggles and a decisive second-half surge, the Saint Thomas (Minn.) Tommies defeated the Omaha Mavericks 68-53 in a Summit League men’s basketball game Saturday at Schoenecker Arena.

A crowd of 2,911 watched as the Tommies, led by a game-high 20 points from Nolan Minessale, methodically pulled away after halftime to improve to 23-8 overall. Omaha, which shot just 32.2% from the field, fell to 15-16.

The contest was a stark contrast to the teams’ previous meeting on Feb. 12, a 98-94 Omaha victory. This rematch was a defensive grind from the outset. Both teams finished with identical totals in several categories: 67 possessions, 7 turnovers, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 5 offensive rebounds. The difference lay in efficiency. Saint Thomas posted an offensive rating of 101.2, while Omaha managed a meager 78.9.

The first half was a low-scoring affair characterized by missed shots and physical play. Omaha’s Lance Waddles, who finished with 14 points, connected on a pair of early three-pointers to help the Mavericks build a brief lead. However, the Tommies’ defense tightened, and their own sporadic offense was enough to carve out a 31-28 advantage at the break. Minessale had 9 points by halftime, but the period was more notable for Omaha’s 5-of-24 shooting from three-point range and Saint Thomas’s ability to maintain a lead despite its own 10 first-half turnovers.

The most important part of the game came early in the second half, when Saint Thomas (Minn.) established definitive control. The Tommies opened the period with a 10-2 run, fueled by a Nick Janowski layup, a three-pointer from Minessale, and another triple from Carter Bjerke. This burst stretched a three-point halftime lead to 42-30 and forced Omaha into a reactive posture for the remainder of the game.

Omaha never recovered. The Mavericks’ shooting woes continued, and they could not mount a sustained offensive threat. Every time Omaha showed a flicker of momentum, Saint Thomas had an answer, often from Minessale. The 6-foot-5 guard from Brookfield, Wisconsin, was the steadying force, adding 11 second-half points and contributing three assists and a block over his 32 minutes.

The Tommies’ lead ballooned to as many as 18 points in the final minutes. While Omaha’s Paul Djobet provided a bright spot with 13 points, the team’s overall offensive execution was insufficient. They finished 5 of 24 from beyond the arc and managed only four assists on 19 made field goals.

Saint Thomas (Minn.) showcased a balanced effort behind Minessale. Austin Herro of Milwaukee had 8 points and 5 assists, Ben Oosterbaan of Hinsdale, Illinois, added 9 points and 3 assists, and Carter Bjerke of Plymouth, Minnesota, chipped in 9 points. The Tommies shot 44.1% from the field and hit 10 three-pointers at a 33.3% clip.

For Omaha, Waddles’ 14 points led the way, followed by Djobet’s 13. Grant Stubblefield of Overland Park, Kansas, dished out 3 assists but was held to 6 points on 2-of-7 shooting. The Mavericks’ recent results showed a pattern of high-scoring games, but they were completely stifled by the Tommies’ defense in this outing.

The victory solidified Saint Thomas (Minn.)’s position near the top of the Summit League standings as the regular season concludes, while Omaha will look to rectify its offensive inconsistencies before the conference tournament.
