Marist Outlasts Quinnipiac in Defensive Metro Atlantic Showdown
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a gritty Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash defined by defensive pressure and offensive droughts, the Marist Red Foxes avenged an early-season loss by grinding out a 71-64 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at McCann Recreation Center.
The game, a stark contrast to the up-tempo affair many anticipated, was ultimately decided by Marist’s superior efficiency and a critical second-half stretch that Quinnipiac could never overcome. Despite an identical 69 possessions for each team, the Red Foxes leveraged a decisive advantage in field goal percentage, shooting 52.9% from the floor compared to the Bobcats’ frigid 37.1%.
The first half set the tone for a defensive struggle. Quinnipiac’s Jaden Zimmerman opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, but Marist quickly established control inside, building a lead that hovered around 10 points for much of the period. The Red Foxes closed the half on a 9-2 run, capped by a Jadin Collins-Roberts dunk in the final minute, to take a 43-34 lead into the break. Jason Schofield, a hometown product from Poughkeepsie, was instrumental early, scoring 10 of his 12 points before halftime on efficient interior play.
Quinnipiac, which entered the game with a 53.7% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm. While guard Asim Jones shouldered the scoring load with a game-high 22 points, the Bobcats’ offense often devolved into isolation attempts, resulting in only five team assists. Star forward Amarri Monroe managed a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but his shooting touch was off, and the team connected on just 5 of 20 attempts from beyond the arc.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred midway through the second half, with Marist protecting a slim 49-47 lead. Over a crucial four-minute span, the Red Foxes unleashed a 10-0 run that broke the game open. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced Quinnipiac into contested shots and turnovers, and timely scoring from Justin Menard and Schofield. Menard finished with 15 points, while Elijah Lewis added 14, including a key 3-pointer during the decisive run.
Quinnipiac’s Keith McKnight, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds, tried to will his team back, converting several tough baskets inside. The Bobcats showed a final spark, cutting a 13-point deficit down to 65-61 with just over a minute to play after a Jones layup. However, Marist’s composure at the free-throw line sealed the outcome. Parby Kabamba, who contributed nine points and eight rebounds, calmly sank two free throws with eight seconds left to extend the lead to 71-64, effectively ending Quinnipiac’s hopes.
The Red Foxes won despite committing 12 turnovers to Quinnipiac’s seven, largely because they capitalized on their opportunities, scoring 36 points in the paint and adding seven fastbreak points. Quinnipiac’s nine offensive rebounds gave them extra chances, but they could not convert them efficiently enough, scoring a meager 10 points off Marist’s miscues.
The victory improved Marist’s record to 13-7 overall and provided a measure of payback for a 64-58 loss at Quinnipiac on Dec. 29. The Bobcats fell to 14-8 with the defeat, their second in three games.
Both teams continue MAAC play next Friday. Marist travels to face Canisius, while Quinnipiac returns home to host Sacred Heart.
