Hargress, Buffaloes Outlast Sun Devils in Big 12 Conference Clash

BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive execution and a pivotal second-half stand, the Colorado Buffaloes held off a persistent Arizona State Sun Devils squad 78-70 in a Big 12 conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out Coors Events Center.

A crowd of 6,820 watched as Colorado improved to 14-10 overall, while Arizona State moved to an even 12-12. The victory completed a regular-season sweep for the Buffaloes, who also defeated the Sun Devils 95-89 in Tempe on Jan. 3.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded over a decisive five-minute stretch late in the second half. With Colorado leading 64-60 and just over eight minutes remaining, the Buffaloes engineered a 9-2 run that effectively sealed the outcome. The surge was fueled by the interior play of Sebastian Rancik and the timely scoring of Barrington Hargress. Rancik, a 6-foot-9 forward from Bratislava, Slovakia, converted a driving layup, and after an Arizona State free throw, he drained a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Isaiah Johnson to push the lead to 69-62 with 5:28 to play.

Arizona State, led by the dynamic scoring of guard Maurice Odum, refused to capitulate. Odum, a junior from the Bronx, New York, assisted on a Massamba Diop alley-oop and later found the 7-foot-1 Senegalese center for another layup to keep the Sun Devils within five points at 72-67 with just over three minutes left. However, Colorado answered each Arizona State push. Bangot Dak of Lincoln, Nebraska, finished a key layup off a feed from Jalin Holland, and Johnson added a driving score to extend the lead back to nine, effectively extinguishing the Sun Devils’ final rally.

The game was a tale of consistent offensive efficiency from Colorado against a more sporadic but potent attack from Arizona State. The Buffaloes scored 39 points in each half, shooting a solid 50.8 percent from the field on 31-of-61 shooting. While their three-point shooting was modest at 6 for 22, they dominated inside, outscoring Arizona State 42-28 in the paint and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities with nine offensive rebounds.

Arizona State, conversely, relied heavily on perimeter creation and free-throw accuracy. The Sun Devils shot just 40.4 percent from the field but stayed in the game by making 16 of 18 attempts from the foul line and hitting eight three-pointers. Their offensive rating of 105.2 on 67 possessions was ultimately bested by Colorado’s more efficient 113.6 rating on 69 trips.

Odum finished with a game-high 23 points and five assists in 37 minutes, relentlessly attacking the Colorado defense. Diop provided a formidable inside presence with 19 points and several key defensive rebounds. Anthony Johnson added 14 points for the Sun Devils.

Colorado’s victory was a balanced effort. Hargress, a guard from Inglewood, California, matched Odum with 23 points and added four assists, controlling the tempo for the Buffaloes. Johnson provided 16 points and three assists, while Rancik was instrumental with 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Dak contributed 12 points off the bench, and Holland added eight points, two assists and two blocks, including a critical swat early in the second half.

The first half set the stage for the tight contest. Arizona State’s Andrija Grbovic of Montenegro opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but Colorado responded with an 8-0 run. The Sun Devils clawed back, with Odum and Johnson connecting from deep, but the Buffaloes maintained a slim lead throughout the period. A late three-pointer from Rancik and a pair of free throws from Barrington Hargress gave Colorado a 39-32 advantage at the break.

Arizona State opened the second half with renewed energy, cutting the deficit to four points on multiple occasions, but each time Colorado had a response, usually from Hargress or Rancik. The Sun Devils’ inability to string together consecutive defensive stops during Colorado’s late 9-2 run proved to be the difference.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Colorado entered the game with a 66.2 percent probability to win, a projection they fulfilled by leveraging efficient scoring, rebounding strength and a timely defensive stance when the game was in the balance.

Arizona State travels next to face Oklahoma State on Tuesday. Colorado prepares for a road test at Texas Tech on Wednesday.
