Duncomb’s Career Day Powers Winthrop Past Presbyterian in Big South Clash
CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — Logan Duncomb scored a career-high 38 points and Winthrop capitalized on a decisive advantage in ball security to defeat Presbyterian 82-72 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Templeton Center.
The Eagles improved to 15-8 overall, while the Blue Hose moved to 11-11.
Duncomb, a 6-foot-10 junior from Cincinnati, was the dominant force throughout, hitting 13 field goals and converting 12 of 16 free throws. He added 11 rebounds for a double-double, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 31 minutes. His performance anchored a Winthrop offense that, while not efficient from the field, generated ample scoring chances by dominating the glass and forcing turnovers.
The most critical phase of the game came early in the second half. Presbyterian, trailing 43-28 at halftime, opened with a 14-5 run, punctuated by a Khalon Hudson 3-pointer and a Jaylen Peterson dunk, to cut the deficit to 48-42 with 16:44 remaining. The Blue Hose had momentum and the home crowd energized.
Winthrop responded by re-establishing its interior presence. Duncomb scored on a hook shot, then drew a foul on the next possession. While he missed the second free throw, the Eagles secured the offensive rebound, leading to a Seifeldin Hendawy hook shot. That sequence sparked a 9-0 Winthrop run over the next three minutes, pushing the lead back to 57-42 and effectively stifling Presbyterian’s comeback attempt. The Blue Hose would not get closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The statistical disparity in ball handling told the story. Winthrop committed only four turnovers, while Presbyterian was charged with 14. The Eagles converted those miscues into 18 points. Winthrop also held a commanding 11-6 edge in offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second-chance points.
Winthrop shot 41.3% from the field (26 of 63) and was just 5 of 19 from 3-point range. However, the Eagles attempted 35 free throws, making 25. Presbyterian shot 41.1% (23 of 56) and matched Winthrop’s 4-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc. The Blue Hose were more accurate at the line, hitting 22 of 25, but could not overcome the turnover deficit and lack of offensive creation, finishing with only two assists as a team.
Hendawy, a 6-8 forward from Cairo, Egypt, provided crucial support for Winthrop with 12 points off the bench. Guard Kareem Rozier of Detroit added 11 points and a team-high five assists.
For Presbyterian, guard Carl Parrish of Miami Gardens led the way with 18 points and four assists. Forward Jonah Pierce of Sanford, Florida, scored 15 points and Triston Wilson of Miami added 12. Josh Pickett of Plainfield, Illinois, also scored 11.
The game was a contrast in offensive styles. Winthrop, despite its shooting struggles, generated a 112.9 offensive rating on 73 possessions through volume and care with the ball. Presbyterian, with 76 possessions, managed only a 94.9 offensive rating, hampered by its inability to sustain possessions or create easy baskets for others.
The victory extended Winthrop’s winning streak to four games. The Eagles will host UNC Asheville next Saturday. Presbyterian travels to face High Point on Thursday.
