Lipscomb Holds Off Austin Peay in Tight ASUN Contest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a tense ASUN Conference clash defined by precision at the free-throw line and a pivotal late-game sequence, the Lipscomb Bisons edged the Austin Peay Governors 82-78 in men’s basketball on Saturday at Allen Arena.

The game, played before a crowd of 2,837, lived up to its billing as a closely contested matchup between two teams jockeying for position in the league standings. Lipscomb improved to 12-7 overall, while Austin Peay moved to 11-6.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the final minute with the score knotted at 78. Following an Austin Peay miss, Lipscomb worked the clock down before Grant Asman, the 6-foot-10 center from Kimberly, Wisconsin, sank a decisive jump shot from near the foul line with 21 seconds remaining to put the Bisons ahead for good.

Austin Peay’s ensuing attempt to tie was a heavily contested three-point shot from Tate McCubbin that missed. On the scramble for the rebound, Lipscomb’s Charlie Williams was fouled and sent to the line for two shots with eight seconds left. He missed both, but Asman secured the crucial offensive rebound and was immediately fouled. He calmly sank both free throws to seal the victory, part of a perfect 15-for-15 night at the charity stripe for the Bisons as a team.

The final margin was directly attributable to Lipscomb’s flawless free-throw shooting and their efficiency with the basketball. The Bisons scored 82 points on just 75 possessions, an offensive rating of 109.2, and committed only 12 turnovers. Austin Peay, while scoring 78 points on 78 possessions for a 100.5 offensive rating, was hampered by 14 turnovers, which Lipscomb converted into 10 steals.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Austin Peay’s Rashaud Marshall, a 6-foot-8 forward from Blytheville, Arkansas, was a force early, scoring 10 of his game-high 23 points in the opening period. Lipscomb countered with balanced scoring, getting eight first-half points from both Titas Sargiunas of Kaunas, Lithuania, and Ethan Duncan of Lubbock, Texas. The Governors took a narrow 42-40 lead into halftime.

Lipscomb emerged from the break with greater intensity, opening the second half on a 13-3 run fueled by defensive pressure. A three-pointer from Sargiunas and a layup by the guard gave the Bisons a 53-45 lead, their largest of the game to that point.

Austin Peay, demonstrating the resilience that has characterized their season, refused to fade. A 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from McCubbin, brought the Governors back to within a point midway through the half. The teams then traded blows over the next several minutes, with neither able to build more than a four-point cushion.

Marshall continued to anchor the Austin Peay offense, finishing with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting. McCubbin, from Columbia, Missouri, added 14 points. For Lipscomb, the backcourt duo of Mateo Esmeraldo and Duncan proved instrumental. Esmeraldo, a 6-foot guard from Monroe, Connecticut, controlled the tempo and tallied 16 points and six assists. Duncan provided a critical spark off the bench with 14 points, including two key three-pointers in the second half.

Asman’s final line of 14 points, three blocks, and the game-sealing plays underscored a strong all-around performance. Sargiunas finished with 13 points for the Bisons.

While Austin Peay shot a slightly higher percentage from three-point range, making 8 of 21 attempts to Lipscomb’s 5 of 18, the Governors’ 12-of-16 performance at the free-throw line paled in comparison to the Bisons’ perfect mark. Lipscomb also held a slight edge in assists, 10 to 7, and blocks, 5 to 3.

The victory gives Lipscomb momentum as they prepare to host Stetson next Thursday. Austin Peay looks to rebound at home against Florida Gulf Coast on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Clarksville on Feb. 5.
