Michigan State Routs Detroit for Fifth Straight Win Behind Fears’ Double-Double
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of power and precision, the Michigan State Spartans remained undefeated, overwhelming the visiting Detroit Titans 84-56 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night before a crowd of 14,797 at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans seized control from the opening tip and never relented, using a dominant first-half performance to build an insurmountable lead. Michigan State improved its record to 5-0, while Detroit fell to 1-5 on the young season.
Jeremy Fears orchestrated the Michigan State offense with maestro-like efficiency, leading all players with 18 points and dishing out 11 assists. The sophomore guard from Joliet, Illinois, was the engine for a Spartan attack that consistently found open looks and capitalized on Detroit’s mistakes. His backcourt partner, Coen Carr, provided a potent scoring punch with 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, and added two blocks in a strong two-way performance.
The game’s trajectory was set early. After a sloppy opening sequence from both teams, Michigan State broke through with a fast-break jump shot from Fears. This sparked a 10-0 run that was capped by a Carr three-pointer, assisted by Fears, forcing an early Detroit timeout and setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Michigan State’s interior presence was overwhelming. The trio of Carson Cooper, Jaxon Kohler, and Jesse McCulloch provided a formidable challenge for the Titans. Cooper, a Jackson, Michigan native, scored 12 points, while Kohler added 13. McCulloch contributed five points and two blocks, anchoring a defense that disrupted Detroit’s rhythm in the paint.
The Spartans led 41-25 at halftime, having shot efficiently and forced the Titans into a series of turnovers that led to 18 points off turnovers for the game. Michigan State also outscored Detroit 34-24 in the paint and 16-9 on fast breaks, highlighting their transition dominance.
Detroit, struggling to find consistent offense, was led by Orlando Lovejoy. The guard from Detroit scored 14 points and handed out four assists. Ayden Carter and TJ Nadeau each chipped in 10 points for the Titans, but the team could not string together enough stops or scoring runs to threaten the Spartans’ lead.
Any hope of a second-half comeback for Detroit was quickly extinguished. Michigan State opened the period on a 9-2 burst, extending their lead to 23 points and effectively putting the game out of reach. The Spartans continued to share the ball, with Fears finding teammates for easy baskets, including an alley-oop to Cooper that brought the home crowd to its feet.
The victory extends Michigan State’s strong start to the season, which includes a notable road win against Kentucky. The Spartans will look to continue their momentum on the road in the Fort Myers Tip-Off, facing East Carolina next.
For Detroit, the search for answers continues after a fifth loss in six games. The Titans will have a quick turnaround as they travel to face DePaul in their next contest.
