Toledo Rides Strong Start to Road Win Over Ohio
ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening statement, the Toledo Rockets built a commanding first-half lead and withstood a spirited Ohio rally to secure a 79-67 victory in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The most important part of the game unfolded decisively in the first half, where Toledo’s offensive efficiency and defensive pressure created a deficit from which Ohio could not fully recover. The Rockets, leveraging a significant advantage in ball security and shot creation, raced to a 41-28 halftime lead. That 13-point cushion proved insurmountable despite the Bobcats outscoring Toledo by a single point in the second half.
Toledo’s backcourt duo of Leroy Blyden and Sonny Wilson orchestrated the early onslaught. Blyden, a guard from Detroit, finished with a game-high 22 points, while Wilson, from Pontiac, Michigan, added 21. Their combined 43 points provided the consistent scoring punch, but it was Toledo’s near-flawless handling of the ball that cemented their control. The Rockets committed only five turnovers, forcing six from Ohio and converting those miscues into a 5-2 edge in steals.
The Rockets’ offensive rating of 118.5 on 67 possessions underscored their effective, if not always pretty, execution. They shot 46.3% from the field, compared to Ohio’s 39.7%, and were markedly more efficient from the free-throw line, converting 12 of 14 attempts. Ohio struggled at the line, making just 6 of 12.
Ohio’s efforts were led by Javan Simmons of Columbus, who posted a strong line of 20 points and five assists. Aidan Hadaway and Ajay Sheldon each contributed 12 points for the Bobcats. The home team showed resilience after the break, trimming the lead at times behind Simmons’ work inside, where he also recorded two blocks. However, Ohio’s offense, which managed an offensive rating of just 99.0, could not sustain the necessary runs to overtake Toledo. The Bobcats also managed only two assists as a team, highlighting their struggles with offensive flow against Toledo’s defense.
Key sequences in the opening period set the tone. After an early three-pointer from Ohio’s Sheldon tied the game, Toledo responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Sonny Wilson jump shot. The Rockets continued to extend their lead through the half, with Blyden and Wilson consistently answering any modest Ohio push. A late first-half jump shot by Blyden sent Toledo into the locker room with their largest lead, effectively deciding the contest.
The victory improved Toledo’s season record to 16-13 overall. The Rockets have now won three of their last four games. Ohio falls to an even 14-14. The result flipped the pregame expectations, as Ohio had been installed as a one-point favorite by oddsmakers and statistical models gave the Bobcats a 59.4% probability of victory.
The game, played before a crowd of 6,404, also saw the total points fall well under the betting over/under line of 159.5.
Toledo looks ahead to a road game at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, while Ohio travels to face Massachusetts on the same night. The Rockets completed a regular-season sweep of the Bobcats, having also won the previous meeting 101-85 in Toledo on Jan. 13.
